Chapter 14
This question had been haunting me for ages.
After the fashion show finally wrapped, I cornered Nathan who had come to watch
the finale.
I pulled him into the backstage makeup room, blocking the door with my body. “Be honest with me. When did you actually start liking me?” I demanded, crossing
my arms.
He didn’t even need to think about it: “Maybe it was when you told Emma you’d ‘climb me like a tree if you got the chance‘?”
I blinked rapidly, taking a moment to process what he’d just said.
“You dirty–minded jerk!” I smacked his chest playfully.
He caught my hand and kissed my palm, sending shivers up my arm. “Just kidding. Actually, I noticed you back in college, but then I left for my residency at Johns Hopkins. I never thought we’d cross paths again. Why do you think I agreed to marry you so quickly after we reconnected? Did you really believe it was just about the family arrangement?”
I remembered how cold and distant he’d acted when I first pursued him, and felt my blood boil. “Then why did you act like such an emotionally constipated asshole at the beginning?”
“I was nervous! Couldn’t you tell?” He looked genuinely surprised.
“No! I couldn’t tell at all!”
I was still fuming when he precisely tilted my chin up and kissed me deeply.
His tongue skillfully explored my mouth, alternating between pressing against the roof of my mouth and teasing my lower lip until my knees went weak. After what felt like forever, I pushed him away, struggling to catch my breath. Suddenly, I heard several strange but familiar sounds coming from nearby.
My eyes widened in alarm as I signaled to Nathan.
He moved lightning–fast, yanking open the dressing room curtain with a dramatic
swoosh.
And there they were.

We made direct eye contact with my brother Ryan and Emma.
I was still half–melted against Nathan’s chest.
And Emma–who had sworn she would “rather die than forgive” my brother—was
cuddled in Ryan’s arms, looking dazed and thoroughly kissed.
Me: “…”
Well, shit. The world was ending.
