Maybe it was the pull of my blood, but my
soul returned home.
I have been watching them these last few
days, my heart as cold as steel.
Polly’s visit home was coming soon. Mom
went to the grocery store to buy food for her
daughter and her husband.
The shop keeper was telling her about me.
“Your oldest daughter is a very good person.
She helped me when I was not feeling well
and sent me to the hospital. I wanted to thank
her but I didn’t know how to find her.”
“Pick whatever you want, this time, it’s on

My mom looked stiff. She never liked to hear
praises about me.
She was better at handling the praise of my
brother or Polly.
“She’s not that good. She’s very disobedient
to her family!”
The shop keeper smiled. “Kids are like that.
They act up as a way of getting your
attention, as parents, we have to
understand.”
My mom looked stunned, her face paling.

She finally learned that I was dead!
I floated to my mother, watching her carefully.
Mom, are you sad? Are you in pain?
I couldn’t see anything in her expression.
She was very calm. She finished her shopping
and went home.
I laughed at myself.
I should have never hoped.
Mom, you just don’t love me.
