- 18.
Mom finally saw me again.
She was chasing me, crying and apologizing.
“Jenny, you’ve gotten so thin.”
“Mom is so sorry. Yell at me, hate me.”
Her voice was full of pain and regret.
I shook my head.
There’s no point.
Mom, I don’t hate you anymore.
But I also won’t forget the pain you gave me.
It was the harsh words when I was not being
favored, it was the constant chores, it was
your attitude as if I owed it all to you.
I’m so tired.
Mom, being your daughter, was so
exhausting.
So, let’s say goodbye.
Forget me, and I will forget you!

Next time, let’s be strangers.
I hope we never meet, and each of us will be
happy.
She spread her arms, trying to hug me. But as
soon as she was close enough to touch me,
my soul dissolved.
She fell to the ground, crying. “No! Jenny,
Mom is begging you!”
She was calling my name, with every sob,
sounding heartbroken.
But I didn’t look back. I thought I saw my
grandmother, the one person who always
loved me when I was alive.
She was as kind as always, she felt bad for all
of my pain. Smiling, she took my hand.
She said she had found a good family for me.
They were a kind loving couple, and they
would treat me like a princess.
I would grow up in an environment full of love,
and become a confident, happy girl.
I would have a peaceful, happy life.
