Chapter 11 The Ever–Present Crack
After another day passed, the doctor finally came out, wiping the sweat from her forehead. “The surgery was successful, but he is very weak and will remain in a coma for a long time.”
I felt relieved and thought, “As long as he is alive.”
After the surgery, Daniel was transferred to the ICU, and Evelyn and I could only see him through the glass every day. After another half month, he finally woke up and was moved to a regular ward. I took a long leave of absence from my job to stay at the hospital and care for him.
I heard the news about Edith. She was arrested, and a week later, Andy passed away. When Edith learned of the news, she committed suicide in the detention center by biting through her
wrist.

eyes
“I’m right here.” I pushed his hand away and raised the bed a bit. “You’re awake. Drink some nutritious soup.”
Daniel held my hand again. “I just had a nightmare, dreaming that when I woke up, you would be
gone.”
“Aren’t I right in front of you?” I smiled and brought the cooled soup to his lips. “The doctor said you’re recovering well. In a few days, you won’t need to eat soft food anymore. In a month at most, you should be able to so b

intently. “While I was in a coma, I heard what you said. You said that as long as I was alive, you would start over with me. During the surgery, I felt like I was dying multiple times, but just thinking of those words gave me the strength to hold on.
“Cee, now that I’m alive, do you want to start over
with me?”
“I can’t answer you right now. I want to think about this carefully once you’ve fully recovered.” I smiled, “Okay, enough with the silly smiles. Eat your food.”
Another month and a half passed, and Daniel’s health was completely restored. On the night before his discharge, he nervously asked me, “Cec, about that question…”
“I’ll tell you tomorrow.”
Late at night, after Daniel fell asleep, I placed a letter beside his pillow and then headed to the airport. I followed Matthew’s mother to a foreign country where she was going to explore the market, and I would likely be living there for a long time.
In that letter, I wrote.
[Daniel, I do not regret that we once loved each other. This love gave me precious feelings and memories. But love is like the clouds scattered by the wind, and it cannot be pieced together again. I have let go of my love for you. Now, I only feel gratitude for you, but no longer love, nor would I start over with you. The past is already behind us. We should both move forward, and I hope everything goes well for you in the future.]
“Dear ladies and gentlemen, the flight is about to land…”

I looked down and saw the lights shining brightly beneath the vast sky. This was the place where I would strive for my goals.
My life would also welcome a brand new chapter here.
I was no longer someone’s wife or someone’s mother.
I would be just myself.
