In their bedroom, Debra asked Marion, “How did Hunter die?”
“Erica didn’t kill him,” he replied. “She took over his company but let him stay as a nominal president. He was deeply in debt because of project issues. Most of it was Erica’s doing. When he found out that all his assets had been transferred to Erica’s account, he lost it and jumped from the building.”
Debra zeroed in on the key point. “Did he jump on his own, or was he forced into it by Erica?”
“This is the key. Everyone asked the same question.” Marion walked to the floor–to–ceiling window and touched the glass. “Erica gave Hunter two choices. The first was for Hunter to jump from the window, and in exchange, she would pay off his debts. The second was for Hunter to sever ties with her and let the debt collectors kill him.”
Debra nodded. “Both options led to death. That’s Erica for you.”
“Hunter chose to jump,” Marion elaborated. “Erica softened, trying to save him, but he intended to push her down. In the end, he lost his balance and fell on his own. The news of his suicide attracted a lot of attention back then, but no one knew the real story.”
“Was there a witness?”
“Randy was there, witnessing the whole thing.”
In the adjacent room, Erica leaned against the window sill. Randy draped a blanket over her shoulders, trying to comfort her.
“Juan has no evidence. He was just bluffing. Don’t take it to heart.”
“Did I make a mistake by seeking revenge on Hunter? No, it was the right thing to do.”
“You were never wrong. He murdered your mother and deserved punishment. He even tried to kill
you but ended up killing himself.”
Randy recalled the past when Erica was first sent to the Houston Mansion. They were both little, and her personality was completely different back then. She was taciturn and timid.
The Osbornes and Houstons were on good terms, and he often visited. On holidays, he’d play with Erica. After a couple of years, she finally became more cheerful.
But soon after, Hunter married another woman and had a new daughter. He sent Erica abroad, and she was gone for ten years.
When Erica came back, the first thing she did was purge the family. She sent Hunter’s new wife and daughter abroad, and before long, Hunter fell from power. The Mathis Group fell into her hands.
She never talked about the hardships she endured during her years abroad. But Randy knew that she wasn’t naturally gifted.
