Chapter 8 An Unexpected Kiss
He paused, hesitating before he continued, “I have a son. He needs someone to take care of him.”
Abigail froze, her mind going blank for a moment as she struggled to process his words.
It wasn’t until the traffic light turned green and the car smoothly moved forward that the reality hit her like a freight train.
She was already grappling with the surprise of a wedding, and now she was expected to step into the role of a stepmother too.
Marcus glanced at her, his voice calm and steady.
“I wasn’t trying to hide it from you. If this is a deal–breaker, you’re free to walk away.”
Abigail bit her lip, her thoughts a tangled mess.
Walking away wasn’t even an option at this point.
The DNA test results weren’t in yet, but Caroline had already moved into Winchester Villa, acting as if she were their real daughter.
Her biological parents had never reached out, making it clear they had no interest in acknowledging her. As for Felix, she was ready to leave that chapter of her life behind.

She looked at Marcus.

A man like him, handsome and refined, surely had a child who would be just as charming.
Besides, she’d heard enough about childbirth to know it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Perhaps becoming a stepmother would be easier than facing that challenge.
Abigail smiled, feeling the tension case. “Alright, I’ll try to be a good stepmom.”
Marcus raised an eyebrow, a slight smile playing on his lips. “Good. Let’s get you changed and head to City Hall.”
Realizing she was still in her torn wedding dress, Abigail blushed deeply.
There was no way she could show up at City Hall like this.
As time was slipping away, they made a quick stop at a nearby mall.
Abigail emerged in a simple white shirt and black trousers, the shirt neatly tucked in to accentuate her slim waist.
Marcus gazed at her in amazement.
As they exited the mall, Abigail overheard whispers from passersby, “They make such a perfect couple!”

The words settled over her like a soothing balm, and she found herself thinking that perhaps marrying Marcus wouldn’t be so bad after all.
At the entrance of City Hall, a sleek black Volkswagen was parked.
The moment the manager spotted Marcus stepping out of the car, his face broke into a wide grin. “Mr…”
He began, but before he could finish, he caught the subtle look Marcus gave him.
The manager quickly adjusted, his smile unwavering. “You’re here to get married, right? Please, come on in!”
Abigail couldn’t help but wonder if they had wandered into the wrong place, given his overwhelming enthusiasm.
The building was immaculate, with its gleaming floors and expansive windows, yet only one counter was open.
After completing her form, Abigail looked around and whispered to Marcus, “I guess marriage rates really are low. It’s a workday, and there’s no one else here.”
Marcus responded with a subtle, nonchalant smile but remained silent. He took her form and handed it to the manager.
The manager was so taken aback upon receiving it that he nearly stumbled.

This was the busiest City Hall in the city, and without Marcus’s special arrangement, they would have been waiting in a lengthy line for hours.
He quickly regained his composure, offering a warm smile, “Everything looks good with your documents. Would you like a photo to remember this day?”
His friendly demeanor made it difficult not to like him.
Marcus and Abigail settled into their seats, ready for the photograph.
The manager noticed the gap between them and gestured for them to close it. “Come on, get a little closer. Be more affectionate. You’re married now. Don’t be shy.“.
Abigail hesitated, and Marcus already slid his chair closer, the legs scraping softly against the floor.
She felt his shoulder brush against hers.
“Perfect! Now look at the camera and smile!” the manager encouraged.
Abigail managed a strained smile, while Marcus’s lips curled into a subtle smirk.
As the manager reviewed the photo, he couldn’t help but think they looked good together, though something still seemed to be missing.

He tapped his chin thoughtfully before suggesting, “Why not face each other? Let’s capture a more intimate shot.”
At his suggestion, Abigail instinctively turned her head.
Marcus mirrored her movement, and before they realized it, their faces were just inches apart.

In that fleeting moment, their lips brushed against each other.
Abigail’s heart skipped a beat as she caught the soft scent of his cologne.
For a second, she was frozen, then quickly pulled back, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.
Marcus looked equally surprised, instinctively touching his lips as if trying to hold onto the lingering warmth.
Abigail’s neck flushed red at the sight.
The manager, always ready to capture a memorable moment, swiftly took a picture of the unexpected kiss.
As they left City Hall, the manager and staff waved goodbye with warm smiles from the steps.
The manager cheerfully called out, “We hope to see you again
soon…”
One of the employees quickly covered his mouth. “Manager, you can’t say that!”

Meanwhile, Abigail, her cheeks still flushed, kept her head down as she climbed into the car.
The kiss accident were utterly mortifying!
She couldn’t shake the feeling that her teeth had accidentally brushed against Marcus‘ lips when she turned too quickly.
Her face grew even hotter with embarrassment.
Abigail gently patted her cheeks, trying to steady her nerves.
Just as she was about to sit up straight, the car door opened, and Marcus slid in beside her. Flustered, she lowered her head even further.
A large hand suddenly appeared in front of her, blocking her
view.
Abigail froze, her eyes widening as Marcus leaned closer.
They were so near now that she could see the shadow of his long lashes.
She felt her heart racing…
