Chapter 26 Spending Money
Marcus sensed the danger and immediately distanced himself from the situation, saying, “We’re just college classmates, and it’s been a long time since we’ve seen each other. I just came to Claudia, and he only lent me his card as a host. If you don’t like it, I’ll return it to him right away.”
Abigail sighed with relief and nodded. “Okay, and then you should return it. Next time, we’ll just make a reservation in advance.”
She didn’t like owing anyone favors.
She was also relieved that Marcus wasn’t like Anthony, who was from one of those top–tier families.
Otherwise, she wasn’t sure how much trouble she would have to
face!
Meanwhile, on the other side…
Just as Anthony was about to head out to a bar, he suddenly received the restaurant bill.
He immediately understood and twirled his car key as he dialed a number.
As soon as the phone picked up, Anthony complained with a touch of sarcasm, “How come you went to Epicurean Cuisine

alone and didn’t invite me? Are we still bros or not?”
“I’m not alone,” Marcus replied, sounding quite smug
When Anthony heard that, he couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh, right, I forgot you’re married now. Say hi to her for me.”
“Mm.”
Marcus gave a short, cold reply.
Before Anthony could process that, he heard a soft female voice in the background. He didn’t catch the words clearly before Marcus spoke again.
“She asked me to thank you for the membership, card, but you don’t have to next time. She doesn’t want you spending so much.”
Anthony was speechless.
This was a first!
He couldn’t believe he was actually hearing a thank you from
Marcus!
It wasn’t about saving money. He thought this was pure showing
off!
He should never have made this call.
Anthony hung up the phone with a frustrated sigh.

He thought, “Ugh, I am such a fool.”
He spent money, and all he got was to witness their affection!
As the call ended, Marcus‘ food was served.

A platter of grilled shrimp, sweet glazed ribs, beef cheese rolls, a bowl of chicken meatball soup, and two desserts.
When Abigail saw the last dish, her eyes lit up, everything was her favorite.
As happy as she was, she didn’t think much of it and assumed Marcus also liked these dishes.
Even though they had already obtained their marriage license and held a wedding, this was the first time they had sat down to eat together.
The atmosphere was a bit awkward and subtle.
Marcus broke the ice by putting on gloves and peeling the shrimp for Abigail.
He twisted off the shrimp’s head with his fingers and then gently squeezed the tail, leaving the perfectly peeled shrimp meat on the small plate in front of Abigail.
“Thank you.”
Seeing him peel the shrimp for her, Abigail returned the favor

by serving him some soup.
The back–and–forth made the atmosphere feel less stiff.

Marcus wasn’t one to talk much, so Abigail took the lead and asked, “I don’t know much about your family. You said you just came to Claudia. Were you living in Veridon before?”
It wasn’t until after they got married that she thought about asking about his family.
In fact, they were probably the only couple who thought about this after tying the knot.
“Mm.” Marcus put down his fork when talking to her, his gaze fixed on Abigail. “My family’s pretty simple. My parents are both alive, but they have their own lives. We rarely get together, even during holidays, so don’t worry about any issues between you. and my mom.”
She thought, “Own lives?
That sounded a bit strange…
Had his parents split up?”
Abigail felt curious but didn’t press the issue, patiently listening as Marcus continued.
“As for my work in Veridon, let’s leave that out for now. I’m currently working for a listed tech company here in Claudia. The salary’s good, the company’s future is bright, and I’m not at risk

of getting fired for the next fifty years. Supporting you is not problem at all.”
When she heard this, Abigail couldn’t help but think of their earlier conversation about him living off her.
She almost wanted to laugh.

It seemed Marcus not only didn’t need to rely on her, but he had been preparing to take care of her long ago.
