Chapter 45 A Free Nanny
Marcus listed out many of Abigail’s qualities because he was worried his mother might think Abigail came from a humble background.
Unfortunately, it backfired and only worsened Jade’s worry.
Marcus had no choice but to explain, “Mom, we’re both adults. There’s no coercion here–we’re together willingly.”
Jade, still concerned, said, “You don’t know anything about relationships. I have to meet her; otherwise, such a wonderful woman might slip away!”
Marcus rubbed his temple, feeling a headache coming on. He quickly tried to talk her down. “Mom, Abigail and I just got married. We’re still in the early stages, and I’m worried that if you show up, it might scare her off. Let’s hold off for now.”
Jade replied in displeasure, “Am I really that scary? I’m not some wicked woman…”
“Of course not,” Marcus said, softening his tone to reassure her.
Finally, he managed to convince Jade to hold off on visiting for the time being.
Meanwhile, Abigail, who had overheard their conversation, felt a wave of disappointment. She quietly slipped out of the study.

Just as she turned to leave, Marcus sensed her movement and glanced toward the door.
But by the time he opened it, there was no one there.
Marcus shook his head and went back inside the study.
Once back in the room, Abigail sat by the window, drank her milk, and hugged a pillow, feeling a mix of emotions.
She had initially married Marcus with a purpose, so why was she now caught up in her feelings? Didn’t she have no feelings for Marcus either?
Though she tried to convince herself otherwise, a sense of disappointment lingered.
The next day, Abigail rushed out to work before Marcus woke up, as if she were intentionally avoiding him.
Olivia noticed that Abigail didn’t seem herself today. She had already downed two cups of black coffee in just two hours.
And even with makeup, her fatigue was evident as if she hadn’t slept at all.
After a moment of hesitation, Olivia asked with concern, “Ms. Winchester, is everything alright? The contract has already been signed, so today’s work isn’t crucial. If you’re tired, you can head home and rest.”

Abigail paused, then beckoned Olivia over and motioned to the chair across from her. “Olivia, come here. Let’s chat for a bit.”
She felt like she was going a bit crazy if she didn’t share what was on her mind, so she needed someone to confide in.
“Sure, what’s on your mind, Ms. Winchester?” Olivia asked.
“I have a friend…” Abigail chose her words carefully. “She suddenly married someone who has a son. Do you think my friend’s husband married her for love?”
Oblivious to the fact that Abigail was actually talking about. herself, Olivia shook her head without a second thought. “No.
way!”
Olivia continued with almost absolute certainty, “Ms.
Winchester, even though I’ve never been in a relationship, I hear a lot of gossip. Your friend’s husband is just looking for a free nanny for his kid. Love? Not a chance!”
Although it stung, Abigail couldn’t deny that Olivia’s reasoning made sense.
Olivia continued, unaware of Abigail’s turmoil, “You really should talk some sense into your friend. If she loves him, she should get out as soon as possible.
“Being a stepmother is tough. Kids need a lot of care, and if anything goes wrong, the stepmother gets all the blame.”
Plus, people often assumed stepmothers were evil.

No matter how well she did, no one would recognize it, but if she slipped up, everyone would remember that.
Besides, since the child was not her own, even if she raised him safely, he might not be close to her in the future.
Anyway, it was not worth it.
Abigail felt even more disheartened after hearing Olivia’s words. She responded absently, “I’ll talk to her.”
Soon, lunchtime rolled around.
Olivia knocked and entered the office. “Ms. Winchester, it’s lunchtime. Do you want me to order food for you?”
Abigail felt no appetite and was about to decline, considering just grabbing something from the company cafeteria later.
“Abigail!” Caroline’s voice suddenly rang out from outside the door.
Abigail looked up as Caroline walked in, carrying an exquisite lunch box.
Seemingly oblivious to the unwelcoming vibe from Abigail and Olivia, Caroline cheerfully said, “Felix brought me lunch. He didn’t realize I couldn’t eat much, so he brought a ton! Come on, Abigail, let’s eat together!”
Abigail only felt disgusted.
