Chapter 53 Wait to Die
As Abigail hesitated, Troy, who had been a step behind, stepped forward and explained, “Dad, this lady is the one who brought me to the hospital. She even helped me chase off that scammer.”
At that, William’s eyes softened. He spoke kindly, “I see. Thank you, miss. Not only are you beautiful, but you’re also so kind–hearted. Truly a good person.”
“No… no need to thank me.” Abigail lowered her head, trying to hide the awkward expression on her face.
As the group made their way toward the hospital entrance, Abigail hung back slightly, watching the family of three walking ahead. A strange warmth stirred in her chest.
With William’s evident care for his wife and Troy’s respectful and thoughtful demeanor, Abigail couldn’t reconcile this family with the image Caroline had painted of exploiters who valued sons over daughters.
Lost in thought, Abigail stepped forward and said to William, “I can go with you. I’m pretty familiar with Reginald Hospital.”
William looked a bit embarrassed and waved her off. “Oh, no, no, that’s too much trouble for you. You’ve already helped Troy so much. I couldn’t possibly-”
“It’s no trouble, really. Let’s get in the car first,” Abigail insisted.

Just then, a taxi pulled up, and she helped him lift the wheelchair into the car.

An hour later, they arrived at the entrance of Reginald Hospital. William went straight to the front desk on the first floor to
ask the nurse. “Hello, nurse. Could you tell me if Dr. Weber is available today?”
Behind the desk, a young nurse, who was idly scrolling through her phone, responded nonchalantly, “Dr. Weber isn’t on duty today.”
As she spoke, she glanced up at William and then at Troy and the others trailing behind him with their luggage. Her initially disinterested gaze turned into one of disdain..
The nurse thought contemptuously, “Ugh, dragging in all this junk to see a doctor? And going straight for Dr. Weber, no less. Do they even know their place?”
William’s eyes dimmed with disappointment. Leaning slightly forward, he placed his hands on the counter and asked earnestly, “Nurse, could you arrange for us to be admitted first? Dr. Weber will be here for consultations tomorrow, right?”
The nurse replied curtly, “There are no available wards.”
William was stunned, refusing to believe what he’d just heard. Desperate, he looked at the nurse and pleaded, “Nurse, could you please call Dr. Weber for us? Tell him there’s an urgent. patient who needs his help.”

Hearing that, the nurse burst into laughter as if William had just told the funniest joke. Her disdain was no longer hidden as she replied rudely, “I can’t make that call. Not just anyone can meet Dr. Weber.”
William, feeling cornered, tried again. “We’re really pressed for time…”
The nurse sneered, “And who isn’t? Everyone here follows the rules. Go register first. If you’re lucky, you’ll get your turn in six months.”
William opened his mouth, feeling suffocated by frustration, but no words came out. Troy, however, couldn’t hold back. He snapped angrily, “What kind of nonsense is this? How can a patient wait that long for treatment?”
The nurse, unfazed, retorted coldly, “And what are you yelling at me for? If you’ve got connections, go pull some strings. Don’t try to bully a nurse like me.”
“You…” Troy clenched his fists, looking like he might lose it and start a fight.
“Don’t.” Abigail quickly stopped him, stepping in to reason with the nurse. “I believe Reginald Hospital has a policy for emergency cases, allowing them to be admitted through a green channel. Isn’t that correct?”
The nurse’s attitude softened slightly as she noticed Abigail’s
refined demeanor. However, the si
refined demeanor. However, the sight of Abigail’s beautiful face stirred up spiteful thoughts.

“So, she thinks her looks can get her anywhere? If they were really well–off, they wouldn’t be wasting time here,” the nurse thought nastily.
Scoffing, she straightened up, her tone even more arrogant. “The green channel is only for VIP’s. Not just anyone can use it. People like you…” She paused, her eyes glinting with mockery as she muttered just loudly enough for them to hear, “Might as well go home and wait to die.”
