Anthony’s grin widened, amusement sparkling in his eyes. “The acquisition’s all set, no problem at all. But there’s one thing I can’t help but wonder.” Marcus shot him a cold glance, motioning for him to continue.
Resting one hand on the table, Anthony suddenly leaned in, his gaze locked onto Marcus‘ face with a playful smirk. “So, now that the Winchester Group is in your hands, is it a wedding gift?”
Marcus‘ eyes darkened as he replied flatly, “Boring.”
Anthony chuckled, leaning back in his chair. With a snap of his fingers, he quipped, “Got it. It’s all for Abigail.” Marcus didn’t bother denying it.
Abigail had been working nonstop in her office all afternoon. As the workday drew to a close, she headed to the restroom for a quick break. The company’s restrooms and break rooms were well–known hubs for gossip, and this time was no exception.
As soon as she closed the stall door, Abigail overheard voices. echoing through the space.
“Caroline is such a joke. She really thinks she can do whatever she wants here just because she was born lucky.” The speaker, a woman with short, chin–length hair, stood by the sink, touching up her lipstick in the mirror.

Next to her was another female colleague, who merely chuckled softly but kept quiet.
Lena, the short–haired woman, didn’t seem to care. She
capped her lipstick, smoothed out the last smudge, and let out a mocking laugh. “Honestly, her brain must be fried. If this company was the kind of place where a little family background could get you ahead, do you think the chairman would’ve spent all these years without gaining any real power?”
A set of footsteps echoed faintly from outside the restroom. But Lena, absorbed in her gossip, didn’t notice. She kept talking, her tone dripping with scorn. “She’s got no skills, but she struts around here like we’re her servants. No wonder Ms. Winchester humiliated her.”
While Lena seemed to enjoy venting, her companion’s
expression suddenly changed. From the reflection in the mirror, she caught sight of a figure outside the door–a figure storming in with fury in their stride.
Before she could warn Lena, the restroom door slammed open with a loud bang, crashing against the wall.
Caroline, whose plan to get Abigail fired had backfired and who had been made a scapegoat by James, was already seething. Hearing Lena’s disdainful remarks pushed her over the edge.
Her face twisted with rage. She stormed in and slapped Lena hard across the face. “Bitch. Who do you think you are, talking about me behind my back?”

Lena staggered back, hitting her lower back against the sink. Pain flashed across her face as she stammered, “Ms. Yannis, I…”
Caroline wasn’t interested in letting her finish. Grabbing a fistful of Lena’s hair, she yanked her out of the restroom with a force that seemed to come from nowhere.
Lena cried out, clutching at her head, but Caroline’s grip was unyielding. No matter how much Lena struggled, she couldn’t break free.
It was just about time when people got off from work, and the hallway was bustling with people. When they saw what was happening, everyone froze in shock.
Lena, her dignity shattered, could do nothing but grit her teeth and endure. She lowered her head in a subservient posture. “Ms. Yannis, I’m sorry. I was just talking off the cuff. Please forgive
me.”
A flash of cold malice crossed Caroline’s eyes as she grabbed Lena by the collar and slapped her again. “No matter how useless I may be, I’m still a legitimate daughter of the Winchester family. Firing you would be a piece of cake.”
Lena’s heart sank at her words, and panic overlook her. “Ms. Yannis, I’ve been with the Winchester Group for I’m a veteran employee. You can’t do this to me.”

just open up a spot for someone else.” At her words, the nearby veteran employees felt a chill run down their spines.
Lena, feeling utterly wronged, muttered, “Ms. Yannis, I
shouldn’t have talked behind your back. You can slap me, yell at me–just please don’t fire me. I know I’m wrong, and I swear I’ll never do it again. Please, let me keep my job.
“I have a sick father at home, and I haven’t even raised enough for his surgery. I can’t lose this job.”
With Caroline so determined to fire her, Lena was terrified. She had thought Caroline was long gone when she had made those careless remarks. She never imagined she’d be caught red–handed. From now on, she’d never speak ill of anyone behind their back again.
Caroline withdrew her hand and gave a slight smile. “If you want me to forgive you, it’s not impossible.” Lena’s eyes brightened.
Caroline continued, “Kneel, give me two loud kowtows, and then announce to the entire company group that you’re a dumb pig. Then I might consider letting you off the hook.”
Lena stood frozen. Her face drained of color, and she clenched her teeth, her body tense with humiliation.

Lena thought, “So she’s going to blacklist me across the whole industry? It’s ruthless–too ruthless.”
Lena almost burst into tears at the thought. If she were in her twenties, she could let go of a job and start over without a second thought.
But she was nearly forty, with a sick father at home. She couldn’t afford to lose this job, and she certainly couldn’t bear the consequences of being blacklisted from the entire industry.
“Fine, I’ll kneel.” Just as Lena gritted her teeth and prepared to kneel, holding back the tears threatening to spill, a pair of hands suddenly reached out from behind her, stopping her midway.
Lena froze, staring in shock at the person who had stepped forward. “Ms. Winchester…”
