This time, I wouldn’t be a puppet. I forced my
eyes open, focusing on Alex’s anxious face.
“Sarah! Wake up! You can’t die!”
He’d checked my story. He’d even confronted
Mark, who, seeing Amelia in pain, had
dismissed him, saying, “How much did Sarah
pay you to lie? Or did she use her body? Take
her, I don’t care!”
Alex told me this, and I felt…nothing. He’d used
my contact, saving Amelia. I was safe. I’d
changed my fate, and Amelia’s. This was my
last donation.

“Where’s Lily? I want to see her.”
Alex hesitated. “Sarah, you need to rest. I’ll
bring her when you’re stronger.” That pause…
“Where is she? Now!”
He finally confessed. “Mark said Lily’s injury
was minor, just needing some fluids and meds.
He ordered all the blood to go to Amelia. I only
found out after getting the new blood for you.
Lily… Lily didn’t make it…‘
دو
I went crazy, using every ounce of strength to
get up. Predictably, I crashed to the floor,
tangled in IV lines and monitor wires. Alex, guilt
and panic etched on his face, helped me back
into bed, murmuring, “Sarah, you need to take
care of yourself. Lily would want that.”
Lily. She hated seeing me suffer. Last time, as
they drained my blood, she’d screamed and
begged Mark to stop, but they’d just tied her up
until she passed out. Her heartbroken cries of
“Mommy” still echoed in my ears. I fought for
control, breath by ragged breath. A small
change, and my daughter was dead…
Alex, fearing another outburst, called Mark.
“Mark, get over here! Lily’s gone, and Sarah’s
barely holding on. She needs you.”
Mark scoffed, “You’ve been saying that since
you called. Even if you are my friend, and you’re
messing around with my wife, I can forgive that.
But Lily’s my daughter! Keep cursing her, and you’ll regret it!”
