Chapter 113 When Is He Married?
Abigail hadn’t expected to accidentally call him, let alone have. Marcus answer so quickly.
She froze for a moment, unsure of what to say. Finally, she spoke, her tone hesitant, “How’s Jaxson doing? Is it serious?”
The first thing she asked about was Jaxson, not him. Marcus felt a pang of jealousy.
“The psychologist gave him a sedative. He’s asleep for now,” he replied evenly.
“A sedative?” Abigail’s voice sharpened.
“What’s wrong? Is there an issue with that?” Marcus asked, puzzled.
Abigail’s tone turned serious. “Jaxson’s only six years old. At his age, kids are already fragile and sensitive during an episode. Forcing a sedative on him could make him more fearful and resistant to interacting with others. In severe cases, it could leave lasting psychological trauma.”
She took a deep breath, trying to keep her anger in check. “A trained psychologist would know this. If she still used a sedative, it’s clear she doesn’t truly care about his condition.”
Abigail’s frustration was palpable. She had once volunteered at a

school for special needs children, where she’d seen similar situations unfold.
Some teachers, unwilling to deal with the challenges, would resort to sedatives to quiet the children without offering any comfort or guidance.

The result? The kids‘ conditions worsened, and one child had even nearly lost their life.
Abigail’d always thought such negligence was limited to those schools. To find it happening to Jaxson under Marcus‘ watch- when he was supposedly such a devoted father–was infuriating.
Marcus‘ expression darkened, his eyes narrowing into a cold glare as he turned to look at Mia. The shift in his demeanor was immediate and terrifying. Mia froze in place, a chill running down her spine as if a venomous snake had slithered over her. Her jaw clenched involuntarily, and unease began to bubble inside her.
She thought, “What has the person on the other end of the line said to provoke such a reaction? Why is Mr. Fitzgerald looking at me like that?” Mia couldn’t make sense of it, but the tension was suffocating.
On the phone, Abigail hesitated. Marcus hadn’t responded, and she began to wonder if her tone had been too harsh. She thought, “After all, I’m only Jaxson’s stepmother. Do I even have the right to meddle in his affairs?”
The thought sent a pang of regret through her. She softened her

voice, adding, “I just think he’s too young to go through something like that. But you don’t have to listen to me.”
“I’ll listen to you.” Marcus‘ voice was firm as he quickly clarified, not wanting her to misunderstand. “It’s my fault for not being more informed about psychology. Don’t worry–I won’t let such an irresponsible psychologist stay by Jaxson’s side any longer.”
Mia’s heart sank. She wondered, “Irresponsible psychologist? Is he talking about me?”
Abigail, meanwhile, let out a breath of relief. “You don’t think I’m overstepping?”
“Of course not,” Marcus said without hesitation. “I’m just afraid you won’t step in.” His voice, low and rich, carried a warmth that felt more intimate than any declaration of love.
Abigail felt her ears burn, the heat creeping down her neck as she fumbled for a distraction. “When I picked up my mom from the hospital today, Dr. Weber mentioned he’d be making house calls every two days. I tried to decline, but he insisted. There’s no stopping him.”
Charles was far too busy to offer home visits to most patients. That he would do so could only be because of Marcus‘ influence. Despite still feeling conflicted about Marcus hiding his identity, Abigail worried about causing him trouble. After all, repaying a favor like this wasn’t easy.
Marcus‘ tone softened further. “It’s fine. Let him come. I’ll feel better knowing your mother is getting thorough care. And don’t

worry about owing him anything. What I’ve done for him before is far more than this small favor.”
He paused briefly, then added, “And if you’re worried about owing me, don’t be. Your parents are my responsibility too. We’re family–no need to draw lines between us.”
Abigail’s cheeks turned crimson again. His words, so heartfelt, left her struggling to form a response. Finally, she murmured, “Thank you.”
“There’s no need to thank me. It’s late–get some rest.” Marcus‘ gaze softened, his expression filled with a warmth that lingered even as he ended the call.
Mia, who had been quietly eavesdropping, stood frozen in shock. She thought, “Did I just hear that right? Mr. Fitzgerald just said -Your parents are my responsibility too.‘ and ‘We’re family.”
Mia’s face went pale as realization dawned. She thought, “Mr. Fitzgerald is married? When the hell did that happen?”
