Chapter 109 This Can’t Be True
“Deal!” Patricia, completely oblivious to the underlying scheme, was so eager to seal the arrangement that she rushed toward the exit as if worried Adela might change her mind.
Before she even made it to the courtyard gate, she abruptly stopped, turned on her heel, and grabbed the bags of expensive supplements stacked near the threshold.
Her face lit up with a grin, as radiant as a blooming flower, entirely forgetting the tense standoff from moments ago. She beamed, saying, “Eddie really is so thoughtful–always bringing back such wonderful gifts for me whenever he travels. I won’t hold back, then.”
“That’s meant for my…” Eddie took a step forward, but Adela caught his wrist, giving him a subtle shake of her head. Without a care, Patricia strutted out the door with the bags in tow.
Eddie turned to Adela, confusion clouding his gaze. He knew just how much Adela cherished Caroline and couldn’t believe she would ever harm Caroline. Before he could voice his doubts, his attention shifted to Abigail, who was standing nearby with William and Troy. His expression stiffened. “Dad, Mom, who’s
this?”
Under Eddie’s warm but questioning gaze, Abigail felt a flicker of nervousness. She thought, “Will he reject me because of how much he cares for Caroline?”

After exchanging a glance with Adela, William stepped forward and said, “Let’s talk inside.”
The family moved to the living room, where they sat down. Troy brewed coffee for everyone, pouring the hot liquid into clear glass cups. Inside, the steaming water swirled.
Abigail stared at her cup, her thoughts in a jumble as Adela’s voice filled the room. Adela recounted everything to Eddie, leaving nothing out. What seemed like a long, convoluted tale. took only a few minutes to explain.
Eddie’s expression shifted from doubt to shock, his entire body going rigid as the truth hit him like a freight train. Abigail quietly shifted her gaze from her cup to Eddie, studying him. without making a sound.
William and Adela might be older now, but it was clear they were stunning in their youth–one exuding refined elegance, the other striking beauty. Eddie had inherited all of William’s best features: a smooth, pale complexion, deep eyes, a high nose bridge, and large, expressive eyes. His whole demeanor was as polished as a flawless piece.
But Eddie’s face was unnaturally pale, his exhaustion evident in the faint lines between his brows. Abigail had noticed his limp when he walked in earlier, too. It was enough to evoke a pang of sympathy.
“No, I don’t believe it. This can’t be true.” Eddie’s voice trembled with emotion as he shook his head. “Mom, Dad, you must’ve

been tricked.” He refused to believe that the sister he’d cherished for over twenty years wasn’t his biological sibling- that she’d done such incomprehensible things.

Troy interjected, “Ryan, I know it’s hard to accept, but it’s the truth. Caroline doesn’t care about us. She found out about her real family and immediately cut ties with us for wealth and power. She didn’t just disown Mom and Dad. She also went ast far as stealing Abigail’s fiancé.”
Eddie’s brow furrowed deeply. “Troy, you shouldn’t spread lies.”
“Ryan, I have proof. Watch this.” Troy knew Eddie wouldn’t accept it without evidence, so he decided to rip the bandage off. He pulled out his phone and played a video of Caroline and Felix together. “That man in the video is Abigail’s ex–fiancé.”
Eddie’s hand trembled as he held the phone, his face drained of all color. He thought, “This is unthinkable. The sister I have adored and protected isn’t even related to me by blood. Not only that, but she has betrayed the family for her gain and stolen my biological sister’s fiancé.”
A wave of nausea rolled over him as he stared at the screen. The image of Caroline, the sister he’d cherished like a precious gem, now made him sick to his stomach. He thought, “Have I been wrong all these years to shield her at every turn?
Our parents had been busy with work, leaving me to care for my siblings. Caroline, in particular, has been my responsibility. Have I been the one who nurtured her selfishness and cruelty? Have I indirectly caused my real sister’s suffering?”

The thought was unbearable. Eddie couldn’t even look at Abigail anymore. Rising from his seat, he stumbled back to his room, his face a mask of despair.
Abigail felt a pang of disappointment as she watched him leave. She thought, “Does my newly found brother dislike me? Does he think I’m the reason he lost the sister he’d once loved so deeply?”
Uncertain, she hesitated before saying, “Maybe I should. go. I’ll come back once he’s had some time to process.”
Adela quickly grabbed her arm. “Abigail, don’t take it personally. Eddie’s just… stubborn. You went through all the trouble of bringing us back here. The least you can do is stay for dinner. I’ll whip up something delicious for you.”
Before Abigail could refuse, William and Adela were already busy in the kitchen. Left with little choice, Abigail stayed.
“Abigail,” Troy spoke softly, sensing her uncase. “Don’t overthink it. Eddie isn’t blaming you. He’s just struggling to accept it all right now. Caroline wasn’t just a sister to him- he once protected her with his life. Ryan cherishes Caroline more than our parents do. Give him some time, and he’ll come around.”
“Protected her with his life?” Abigail arched an eyebrow in curiosity. There was clearly more to the story.
Troy’s expression darkened as he recalled the past. His voice

filled with bitterness as he said, “Eddie’s limpness, Mom’s illness -they’re all because of Caroline.”
