Chapter 104 Karma’s a Bitch
Done with all the drama, Abigail decided to skip the dance entirely and headed straight to Anthony to say her goodbyes.
Anthony studied her face carefully before testing the waters. “Hey, is this about Fitz ditching you? I can tell you’re not thrilled.”
址
Sure, Abigail was annoyed, but Marcus‘ exit wasn’t what was getting under her skin.
She forced a small smile and waved off his concern. “Nah, it’s not that. Just feeling a bit stuffy in here. Think I’m gonna head out–you guys have fun, though.”
Anthony saw right through her fake smile. She was definitely ticked off, no question.
For the sake of his buddy’s happiness, Anthony felt compelled to jump to Marcus‘ defense. “Look, Abigail, I know it’s not cool that Fitz left you hanging, but cut him some slack. Getting Jaxson. here was like moving mountains. There’s zero room for anything to go wrong.”
As a posthumous child who struggled with autism and acute stress disorder, Jaxson was treated like a precious gem by the Fitzgerald family.
Anthony wasn’t sure if Marcus had filled Abigail in on Jaxson’s

situation, so he kept his hints subtle, not wanting to overstep.

Abigail’s eyes darkened, but curiosity got the better of her. “What about Jaxson’s mom?” she asked. “Where is she now?”
“Would Marcus run into her when he went back?” she wondered. “They must have been deeply in love once, right? They won’t have a kid otherwise.”
Anthony’s face turned ice–cold at her words. Through gritted. teeth, he spat out a single word, “Dead.”
His face and voice dripped with pure disgust. He couldn’t even hide how much he despised her.
Of course, Anthony hated her–she was the witch who’d killed his idol!
He’d played out her downfall in his head like a thousand times, each scenario more satisfying than the last.
Abigail was too shocked by the whole situation to catch Anthony’s scowl.
People said the only thing more dangerous than a first love was a dead first love. And this wasn’t just any dead first love. She’d left behind a son, which made everything ten times more complicated.
How was anyone supposed to just get over something like that?
“So that’s why Marcus was so protective of his son,” Abigail

thought. “Talk about loving everything connected to the one your love.”
Abigail’s mood took an even bigger nosedive as that thought hit her. She could deal with Marcus being married before and having a kid. That wasn’t the issue.
What she couldn’t stomach was how he could be so gentle with her, constantly flirting and drawing her in, while his heart clearly belonged to another woman.
And the way he’d approached her with all these secrets and lies. was the final straw.
Abigail realized that she had come so dangerously close to falling into another emotional trap, all because of his sweet gestures and tender care.
As waves of frustration washed over her, Abigail found herself questioning this marriage for the first time.
Meanwhile, the security team didn’t waste any time showing James and his family the door, practically tossing them out of the banquet hall.
The humiliation of the evening’s events was too much for James to handle. His face turned an ugly shade of purple as he spun around and slapped Caroline hard across the face.
The sharp crack of the slap echoed through the room, leaving Caroline’s cars ringing. She stood there frozen, her mind struggling to process what just happened.

“Honey, how could you hit Caroline like that…” Natalia’s voice. quivered with distress.
“Dad…” Caroline’s eyes glistened with tears.
James glared at Caroline with pure venom in his eyes. “Don’t you ‘Dad‘ me,” he growled. “If I’d known you’d turn out this useless, I wouldn’t have even claimed you as my daughter!”
Caroline’s pupils constricted as she flinched, her whole body trembling.
But James wasn’t done. His voice cut through the air like a knife. “You’ve got zero real talent, but man, you’re a pro at being fake. Thanks to you, I can’t even show my face in high society anymore. You’ve completely humiliated me!”
Caroline swayed on her feet, the emotional pain crushing her from all sides. She looked like she might collapse any second.

way.
Caroline had to play it cool, though, forcing herself to defend her actions even as she felt like crumbling inside. “Dad, I swear I had no idea the invitation was fake. I never thought Felix would lie to me like that…”
At this point, she had no choice but to throw Felix under the bus.

But James‘ face just got darker, his words dripping with venom. “You’re just not good enough. When Felix was with Abigail, he never pulled this kind of crap with her!”
Caroline felt her stomach drop. “Seriously? You are comparing me to Abigail again? Didn’t you get how much I absolutely couldn’t stand hearing about Abigail right now?” she thought.
Despite her burning rage, Caroline forced herself to swallow her pride. Through gritted teeth, she pushed down her resentment. and made herself sound as humble as possible. “Dad, I’m so sorry. I know I let you down. I promise next time I’ll-”
“Get out of my face! I can’t even look at you right now. You’re nothing but a jinx!” James wasn’t having any of it, shoving her away with one harsh push.
Caroline stumbled, losing her balance completely before hitting the ground hard.
She tried to push herself up, but then it hit her–a sharp, dragging pain in her lower abdomen. Warm blood began trickling down her thighs.
“Oh my gosh! Caroline, you’re bleeding!” Natalia was also mad about Caroline embarrassing them all, but seeing her own daughter hurt like this–seeing the blood–that maternal instinct kicked in, and panic took over.
Caroline’s face went ghost–white as she clutched her stomach, her voice breaking with desperation. “Mom, please… Get me to

Natalia scrambled to help Caroline up, her words tumbling out in a panic. “Honey, start the car! We need to get Caroline to-”
But before she could even finish her sentence, James had already peeled out of there in his car, leaving them in the dust.
