Chapter 27
In the hospital ward, the smell of disinfectant permeated the
air.
Antonio lay quietly on the hospital bed, his face pale as paper. Although his abdominal wound had been bandaged, his weak appearance still tugged at people’s hearts.
Grace sat on the edge of the bed, her eyes filled with complex emotions.
She held a towel in her hand, wiping the cold sweat off Antonio’s forehead from time to time.
These days, Grace stayed by Antonio’s side, taking care of him attentively.
From the initial heart–pounding moments to the current relative calmness, her inner self has gone through countless struggles.
Recalling the scene at the edge of the cliff, Antonio did not hesitate to stab himself with a dagger, just to exchange for her survival. This self–sacrificing act deeply moved Grace.
A month passed, and Antonio’s body gradually improved.
That day, he forced himself to sit up and looked at Grace, whispering.
“Grace, thank you for taking care of me these days. I have something for you.”

After speaking, he asked his assistant to bring two boxes.
Grace took the box with confusion and, as she opened it, tears blurred her eyes.
In one box were the ashes of her and Antonio’s daughter, while the other contained those of her grandmother.
“I knew how important these were to you,” Antonio’s voice sounded slightly weary.
“I didn’t hire anyone, I went through the entire mountain myself, just to hand them over to you intact.”
Grace’s hands trembled as she held the box, and tears welled up in her eyes.
She looked at Antonio, her lips moved, but she didn’t know what to say.
Antonio’s action completely touched the softest part of her heart, and all the resentment and dissatisfaction she once had towards Antonio seemed less important at this moment.
Antonio’s gaze softened more and more as he looked at her.
“Grace, I truly appreciated that God gave me another chance to prove my love for you.”
“I regretted countless times why I didn’t cherish you, didn’t cherish our home, but I had no answer.”
“Until today, I still didn’t want to let you go, how ridiculous.”
Grace’s emotions surged, and she didn’t know now either, how she was supposed to face him.

Looking at Antonio’s face, she only felt familiar yet unfamiliar.
What remained in my mind were the little moments spent with Zackery.
The time when they accompanied and understood each other was the love she truly desired.
She knew deep down that her love for Zackery had already become deeply rooted, without her even realizing it.
Grace took a deep breath, lifted her head, and her eyes were filled with determination.
“Antonio, I am truly grateful for everything you did for me. I will always remember this favor.”
“But, in the end, we couldn’t go back anymore. The person I loved was Zackery.”
Tused to think that I had been hurt and would never fall in love with anyone again. But in a life–or–death moment, just like you were thinking of me in your heart, my heart only had Zackery.
Antonio seemed hurt by these words and remained silent for a long time.
After a moment, he said with a bitter smile.
“I understood, in fact, I had known it would be like this a long time ago.”
These days, I have also been thinking, if back then, I had trusted you a little more, maybe our family would still be a harmonious and happy one now.

“If I had been more attentive to my daughter, she wouldn’t have met such a tragic death.”
“I was an irresponsible husband and an irresponsible father.”
“But I realized too late, I had already lost everything I could lose.”
“Do you still remember our dream with Talia? To go see the Northern Lights together. When we were young, our father always demanded that I be the first. One time, I got sick and came in second, so he locked me in a small dark room.”
Back then, I was constantly envisioning various kinds of light in my mind. I thought that in the future, I must love my child and give them all the light in this world.
“But I broke my promise.”
Grace remained silent, they could never go back.
