He smirked and left.
I didn’t know if I’d do well, but I tried.
Over the summer. I worked at a diner. It was
<
tiring, but the pay was good.
The day the results came out, Jason came to
the diner. “What’s your student ID?”
“Huh?”
“Your student ID.”
“Can we see the results now?” I looked at his
computer.
He rolled his eyes. “No, can’t you answer the
question the first time?”
“Oh, okay.”
<
He wrote down my student ID and waved his
hand. “Go away.”
He was still the same.
I was busy when Jason suddenly ran up to
- me.
I was busy and had forgotten about the
results.
“What? Move.”
His eyes were wide. “443.”
“Huh?” I realized he was talking about my
score.
く
“Huh?” I realized he was talking about my
score.
Higher than before. Could I get into college?
I could. I got in.

Stanley came to the diner to wait for me. “Did
you get your results?”
“What’s it to you?”
His lips moved, and his face was gray. “I just
want to know how you did. If you’re not
<
happy, you can study again.”
I laughed. “Study again? You gonna pay for
it? You gonna not buy Carrie medicine? Did
you think about me when you gave, everything
to her?”
He opened his mouth, but said nothing.
As I left, he said, “Carrie didn’t take the test.”
“What?”
Carrie was late.
She lived far away, and didn’t have money for
a hotel.
<
After being late for the first test, she lost it.
“She’s sick, will you go see her?”
“Do I look like Mother Theresa?”
Stanley didn’t say anything.
I saw Carrie again the day before I went to college.
She looked tired and scary.
“Congrats.”
She smiled, cracking her dry lips.
L
I didn’t know what to say.
“Do you know why Stanley says he owes
me?”
“Don’t want to know.”
She looked sad. “Because I killed his dad.”
