Chapter 56
ROSALIE

Damien’s glare could have burned through steel. His rage was like a storm that refused to break, swirling heavier with every second of silence between us. My heart pounded as his gaze lingered on Eric, sizing him up like an enemy on the battlefield. I wanted to scream, to cry, to disappear–anything to make this moment stop.
“This is him, isn’t it?” Damien growled, his voice low and venomous as he pointed an accusatory finger at Eric. “The man you’ve been sneaking around with. The one you’ve been talking to behind my back.”
Eric stepped back slightly, his hands raised in defense. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, man. I just met her today. I don’t even know her!”
“Oh, you don’t know her?” Damien barked, taking a menacing step closer. “Then why were you standing so damn close to her? Smiling at her like you know her? Don’t lie to me!”
“Damien, stop!” I said, stepping between them. My voice shook, but I kept going. “You’re overreacting. He’s just a stranger- he asked for directions, that’s all!”
But Damien wasn’t listening. His dark eyes burned as he turned his wrath toward me. “Directions? That’s the story you’re sticking with?” His voice dripped with sarcasm. “Do you think I’m stupid, Rosalie? Do you think I don’t see what’s going on?”
“Nothing is going on!” I snapped, my frustration rising despite my fear. “You’re blowing this out of proportion!”
“I know what I saw!” Damien roared, his voice echoing through the aisle. “This isn’t the first time, is it? Weeks ago, you were on the phone with someone, whispering like I wouldn’t notice. Is this him? Is he the one you’ve been confiding in? The one you’ve been planning your little escape with?”
Eric’s eyes darted between us, his confusion deepening. “Escape? Look, man, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I just needed directions!”
Damien ignored him completely, his focus locked on me. “You think I don’t remember? I walked in on you that night, Rosalie. You were telling someone how unhappy you were, how you couldn’t take it anymore. Was it him? Was he the one promising to help you leave me?”
My chest tightened. I knew exactly what night he was referring to, and it wasn’t what he thought it was. But there was no convincing him–not in this state.
“Damien,” I said softly, trying to keep my voice calm, “you’re wrong. You’re letting your anger cloud your judgment.”
“My judgment?” He scoffed bitterly, his eyes narrowing. “I’m angry because I care! I’m angry because you’re my wife, Rosalie, and I won’t let anyone take you away from me!”
Eric cleared his throat, his voice cutting through the tension. “Look, buddy, I’m sorry you’re going through whatever this is, but I’m not involved. I’m just a guy trying to buy some Tylenol. I’ll leave you both alone to deal with your uhm issues.”
Damien turned on him, his voice dangerously low. “Don’t you dare walk away! Don’t stand there and act innocent while you’ve been scheming with my wife behind my back.”
Eric sighed, visibly frustrated. “You’re insane, you know that? I don’t know you, and I sure as hell don’t know your wife. You need to take a step back before this gets out of hand.”
Damien let out a bitter laugh, though there was no humor in it. “You don’t get to tell me how to handle my marriage.”

My stomach churned at his possessive tone, and I placed a hand on his arm, trying to diffuse the situation. “Damien, please. Let’s just go. This isn’t worth it.”
He yanked his arm away from me, his anger boiling over. “Not worth it? You’re standing here defending him, and you expect me to just walk away?!”
“I’m not defending anyone!” I cried, my voice breaking. “I’m trying to protect you! Don’t you see what you’re doing? You’re making a scene. People are staring.”
“I don’t care who’s staring!” he yelled, his voice booming. “Let them stare. Let them see how far I’ll go to protect what’s mine.”
Eric, who had been silent for a moment, finally spoke up again. “You need to stop talking about her like she’s a possession, man. She’s not a piece of property. She’s a person. Your wife.”
Damien’s eyes darkened further, his fists clenching at his sides. “And who the hell are you to lecture me about my
wife?”
“Someone who can see you’re out of control,” Eric said firmly. “Yelling at her like this, humiliating her in public–it’s not okay. If this is how you treat her here, I can only imagine how bad it is at home.”
The implication made my blood run cold. “No!” I said quickly, panic lacing my voice. “It’s not like that. Damien’s never- he’s not-”
But Eric cut me off, his focus still on Damien. “Look, if she’s scared to tell the truth, I can help. I can call someone right now if he assaults you on a regularly basis. Just say the word.”
“You call anyone, and I swear-” Damien growled, stepping toward Eric with a dangerous intensity.
“Damien, stop it!” I shouted, tears springing to my eyes. “You’re making this worse!”
“Stay out of this, Rosalie!” he snapped, his anger momentarily turning on me.
Eric stepped in front of me protectively, his voice firm. “Don’t talk to her like that. She doesn’t deserve it.”
Damien’s fury reached its peak. “You want to teach me how to talk to my wife now? You think you know her better than I do? You must really want my fist connecting with your face!”
“She’s not a thing you own,” Eric retorted, his voice calm but unyielding. “She’s a human being with feelings, and she’s telling the truth, you are just too paranoid to see it.”
The accusation hit Damien like a slap to the face. His nostrils flared, and I could see him teetering on the edge of losing control completely.
“She doesn’t need your help,” Damien hissed through gritted teeth.
Eric turned to me, his voice softer now. “Ma’am, if you’re in danger, you can tell me. I’ll call 911 right now. You don’t have to go with him.”
“No!” I said desperately, stepping between them again. “It’s not like that. Damien would never hurt me. He’s just… upset. Please, just let it go.”
The tension was unbearable, and I could feel Damien’s anger simmering beneath the surface, ready to explode. Before he could do something he’d regret, a mall security guard approached, his presence cutting through the chaos.
“Is there a problem here?” the guard asked, his tone firm.

“No,” I said quickly, forcing a shaky smile. “We were just leaving.”
The guard looked skeptical but didn’t push the issue. “Alright, but keep it down. This is a public place.”
I grabbed Damien’s arm and tugged gently, my voice low and pleading. “Let’s go, Damien. Please.”
For a moment, he hesitated, his jaw tightening. Then, without a word, he allowed me to lead him toward the exit.

The walk to the car was suffocatingly silent. As soon as we were outside, Damien yanked his arm free and spun to face me, his expression dark and unreadable.
“What the hell was that, Rosalie?” he demanded, his voice sharp and bitter.
I looked around nervously, still hyper–aware of our surroundings. “Can we not do this here?”
“Oh, so now you care about privacy?” he shot back, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “You didn’t seem to care when you were flirting with that guy!”
“I wasn’t flirting!” I snapped, my own frustration bubbling to the surface. “He asked for directions, Damien. That’s it.”
“And I’m just supposed to believe that?”
“Yes, because it’s the truth!”
He stared at me for a long moment, his anger simmering just below the surface. “Get in the car,” he said finally, his voice low and cold.
I wanted to argue, to fight back, but I could see the storm still raging in his eyes. Without another word, I walked to the car and slid into the passenger seat.
Damien got in on the driver’s side, slamming the door shut behind him. The silence between us was deafening as he started the engine and pulled out of the parking lot.
I stared out the window, my chest tight with unspoken words. I wanted to explain, to make him understand, but I didn’t know how.
