Chapter 2
The sharp scrape of a white porcelain plate against a glass tabletop broke my thoughts.
When my focus returned, I saw Mason Grant placing a plate of sliced oranges in front of
- me.
“Thank you for helping Mina. Have some fruit,” he said.
I didn’t move. I just stared blankly at the scar on his hand–the very same one that Luca Bennett had gotten in college while protecting me.
Every time we held hands back then, I’d unconsciously trace it with my fingers.
There’s no way I could be mistaken.

Absolutely no way!
I looked up and met his eyes–calm, distant, like a still lake, without a hint of emotion.
My heart felt like it was violently pierced.
In a panic, I stood up, muttering, “I have something to take care of at home, I’ll be going now,” before quickly rushing out the door.
I nearly ran back home, and with a loud “bang!“, the door slammed shut behind me. I leaned against it, gasping for air.
Only after doing that did I slide down to the floor, exhausted.
Just then, Dora trotted over to me, sniffing me curiously. She seemed to have caught a familiar scent, circling around me and

wagging her tail joyfully.
I released my hands, which had turned red from the pressure, and gently placed them on her head, as if seeking a moment of familiar peace.
Soon, she picked up a small pillow and dropped it at my feet.
It was the one Luca Bennett had bought for her before the accident.
Dora was the first familiar “family” I had seen since waking up four years later. We had adopted her during our ninth month together.
On the day we decided to adopt her, he had said that Dora would be our first child.
We were going to give her the best living conditions and make her the happiest dog in

the world.
So, the food she ate was always homemade by us, and her clothes were always
hand–sewn.
He had smiled and said, “Mom and Dad love her. She’ll be happy.”
How could a child not recognize her father?
Dora must have smelled the familiar scent and thought her long–lost family was finally coming back.
I hugged her tightly, my hands trembling uncontrollably from the sobs.
I whispered softly to her, telling her that he wouldn’t be coming back.
Mason Grant was like him in so many ways-

it was him, yet not quite him.
I couldn’t take the chance, or rather, I didn’t have the right to take that chance.
I was afraid that if I spoke, he wouldn’t remember me. Worse, he might even feel disgusted by me.
The man he had become was no longer the Luca Bennett I knew. He had a brand new life and someone he deeply loved.
That girl stood beside him, and they looked so perfect together, just like the smiling me standing by his side once.
But now, no matter my feelings, I had no right to disturb his new life.

heavy sleep.
However, not long after, a sudden, urgent knock on the door pulled me out of this hard–earned slumber.
I groggily opened the door and was stunned to see Luca Bennett standing there!
For a brief moment, there was a flicker of hope in my tired eyes, but it quickly dimmed.
No, it should be Mason Grant standing at the door now.
His expression didn’t look good. Although his gaze was as calm as yesterday, there was an unmistakable hint of anxiety in his
eyes..
“Sorry, Mina’s not feeling well. I just got back from abroad, and I don’t know the roads

here or how to use the local navigation. I could only find you. Can you take us to the hospital? Please.”
Seeing the girl in his arms, pale like paper, despite a thousand thoughts racing through my mind, I could only nod and quickly grab the keys, heading for the hospital with him.
He walked quickly. He used to slow down, waiting for me to catch up, but now, he moved with long strides, and I almost couldn’t keep up.
On the way to the hospital, I wiped the sweat from Mina’s forehead.
A glance at Mason Grant showed that, although he appeared composed and calm, I noticed the knuckles of his index finger were reddened from where his nails had been digging into it–an unmistakable sign of his

anxiety just like four years ago.
“Don’t worry, I’m watching her. Just focus on driving,” I couldn’t help but say.
