Forget each other in this life
Chapter One
I always thought of myself as just… average.
Then there was Liam, a golden boy, a
freaking prodigy.
He ended up with a life–altering injury
because he pulled me from the path of a
speeding car.
Liam’s family kicked him to the curb, and I
was left scrambling, juggling three jobs to pay
for his medical care.
We got married, had a kid.
Liam used every connection he had to send
our son, Danny, overseas, saying he just
<
Then Danny came home.
That’s when I saw Liam stand up from his
wheelchair.
He was holding hands with a woman named
Serena, her face lit up with happiness. He had
Danny in his other hand. They were just
strolling along.
Serena playfully nudged him, “Aren’t you
worried Liv will find out?”
Danny piped up, “Nah, Mom’s too dumb to
figure it out!”
I huddled in a corner of the airport, feeling
sick.
<
Liam, looking like he’d just walked out of a
magazine, strutted toward Serena, clutching a
bouquet of long–stemmed roses.
I heard Danny’s excited voice, “Dad! Me and
Mommy are finally with you!”
Serena threw herself into Liam’s arms,
giggling.
“Oh, Liam, I missed you so much.”
People stopped to stare, whispering about
how picture–perfect they were.
Serena, in a crimson dress, practically
glowed.
I glanced down at my own faded clothes,
forcing a laugh.
Г
I hadn’t bought anything new in years, not
with Liam’s medical bills.
Danny proudly showed Liam a limited–edition
toy car, “Mommy got it for me!”
“Isn’t it awesome?”
My fingers tightened around a toy car I’d
picked up on clearance at the grocery store.
Liam scooped up Danny, playfully bopping
him on the nose.
“Yeah, your Mommy’s the best.”
Serena snuggled closer, tugging at Liam’s
jacket.
く
“I’m pretty good to you too, you know.”
Danny giggled, covering his eyes, wriggling in
Liam’s grip.
“Mommy kept talking about you on the
plane!”
Liam, holding Danny and Serena, headed
toward a Rolls Royce parked outside.
A butler opened the door, bowing low,
“Welcome home, Master Danny, Mrs. Grant.”
My breath caught in my throat.
Five years ago, Liam had been crippled and
disowned.
When his wounds got infected, I begged the
<
I even bashed my head against their front
door, but they didn’t even flinch.
Now, their servant was bowing and scraping.
Just how much had Liam been lying to me?
The car sped off, and I heard Danny
squealing, “Finally, we’re home!”
“I don’t ever want to be stuck in that crummy
apartment with that dirty lady again.”
I hailed a cab, following them.
The car pulled up to the Grant family estate.
Dozens of servants stood at the entrance.
Their voices boomed, “Welcome home,
く
Even Liam’s grandmother, holding a cane,
stood at the door. The moment she saw
Serena, she cackled.
“Serena, darling, you’re finally back!”
It was like a scene from a movie. They clearly
adored Serena.
My phone buzzed. It was Liam.
“Liv, are you coming home tonight?”
Danny was coming home. I’d swapped shifts,
desperate to see him.
Liam was testing me. If I didn’t come home,
he’d be free to stay at the Grant estate.
“None Gotta work.”
<
I sent the message numbly, and saw Liam
grin at what I had written.
He swept Serena into his arms, as everyone
cheered.
Serena wrapped her arms around Liam’s
neck, giggling. “Liam, you’re incorrigible!”
The crowd roared with laughter, watching
them flirt.
I turned away, only to be grabbed by a cook
and dragged into the kitchen.
The head chef glared at me, shoving an apron.
into my hands.
“Where the hell have you been? Get
changed!”
I waved my hands, explaining, “I’m not here to
work. You’ve got the wrong person.”
The chef scoffed, looking me up and down.
“Not here to work? Figuring on seducing the
young master, are you?
Don’t get any ideas. We’re already one cook
short.”
There was no arguing. I slipped on the apron
and started peeling potatoes.
Then Liam sauntered into the kitchen.
My breath hitched as I heard him behind me.
“Make sure those potatoes are peeled good.
Serena loves her mashed potatoes.”
く
I froze. The chef nudged my leg.
“You heard the man.”
I kept my voice low, terrified Liam would
recognize me.
