After a moment, he came over and said,
“Sarah, I know losing Lily is hard, but we can
have another baby. It’ll be okay.”
I looked at the man pretending to care, trying
to force a smile, but I couldn’t.
I couldn’t bring myself to smile at him
anymore.
All that was left was hatred.
He didn’t seem to notice, thinking I was just
consumed by grief.
He kept trying to comfort me.
<
“Sarah, I’ll always be here for you. Don’t be
sad.”
He wrapped his arms around me, whispering
sweet nothings.
“Nate, I need to get out of here.”
I looked at him pleadingly.
Nate nodded. “That’s a good idea. I wish I
could go with you, but I’m so swamped right
now.”
I knew he was busy with Claire’s son’s
upcoming transplant.
He wouldn’t have time for me.
“It’s okay, I can manage on my own.”
く
I tried to sound convincing.
He agreed, but before he could say anything
else, his phone rang.
I saw the guilty look on his face as he
answered.
It was Claire.
He rushed out to the balcony to take the call.
“Sarah, something came up. I have to go,” he
said, returning to the room.
He looked at me apologetically. “I’m going to
be really busy the next few days. I won’t be
able to be around much.”
“Go. Do what you have to do,” I said, forcing
<
a siit.
As I watched him rush out, my face hardened.
He was willing to hurt our child for Claire’s
son, and now he was leaving me.
All I felt was hatred.
After Nate left, I booked a flight home.
Before leaving, I went to Nate’s study.
He didn’t like me being in there, so I rarely
went.
This was the first time I’d been inside since
we got married.
The room was neat and tidy, nothing out of
<
He had been in such a hurry that he had
forgotten to shut it down.
I clicked on the desktop and saw his
messaging app was still open.
I saw a conversation between him and Claire.
“Nate, Mikey is so sick. I’m so afraid I’m
going to lose him!”
“Nate, Mikey is your son too. You have to
protect him!”
“I will, Claire. I promise I’ll take care of our
son, even if it costs me everything.”
“The doctors say they found a match. If your
daughter’s kidney works, Mikey can live!”
く
“Nate, you’re willing to do this for me, right?”
“Claire, I’ll save our son’s life.”
“As for Sarah, I’ll make it up to her later.”
As I stared at the messages, my heart went
numb.
My child had died because of this.
No wonder Nate had been making so many
excuses to take her to the hospital for tests.
I had thought he was just a new father,
concerned about his daughter’s health.
Now I knew it was all part of his plan.
He had killed my child for his son.
I saved the evidence, packed my bags, left a
divorce agreement, and headed to the airport.
I didn’t want to see Nate’s face again.
At the airport, I saw Nate.
He was pacing anxiously.
When he saw me with my suitcase, his face
turned pale.
I even saw fear in his eyes.
“Sarah, what are you doing here?”
He looked at me, his voice strained.
く
“I said I was going away for a while,
remember?”
