“Pam, you crazy woman! Why did you hit
Ashley? What did she do to you?” Mark pulled
Ashley behind him, like a momma bird
protecting her chick.
I pointed at the bags on the counter.
“You sold my stuff without asking?”
Mark’s face turned red. “I… I was just
borrowing it. I was going to pay you back.”
“Borrow my bag without me knowing? We’re
broken up. Isn’t that stealing?”
“Pam, you’re so shallow! It’s just a purse! You
can buy another one. You think money is the
only thing that matters? Are you happy she’s
nearly dead?”
Mark was getting worked up, like I was the
one cheating on him. I couldn’t believe the
garbage coming out of his mouth.
Г
“You’re guilt–tripping me?”
“Too bad I don’t have a heart.”
People started whispering.
“First, we’re broken up. Second, those are my
bags. And third, you want to save your
precious mentee, fine. What’s that to me? Am
I supposed to raise your future kids too?”
Mark was speechless. He knew he was
wrong. People were recording with their
phones. He knew this wasn’t going anywhere
good.
“Fine, fine, fine. That one, that one, and that
one, I bought myself. I can sell them.”
Г
I looked at my friend. Mark was trying to
weasel his way out of it all. It turns out he
thought he had the right to take back gifts.
“Whatever.”
I didn’t want to deal with him. I turned to the
shop owner. “Those are mine. Figure out how
much they’re worth and put the money in my
account.”
Mark knew his company was broke. He
couldn’t afford to help Ashley. So, he came up
with this pathetic plan.
“Pam, you really want to break up? Think
about it. You’re almost 30. Who’s going to
want you? I really loved you. Ask your parents
for five million to pay off Ashley’s debts. Then
Г
Mark was serious, like breaking up with him
meant my life would be over.
“Mark, you’re insane. Pam’s way too good for
you.
“Plus, my brother’s 32 and single. He’s like,
six–foot–two and super handsome. Pam will
be better off without you! Get out of here,
you two–faced jerk!”
My friend grabbed me and we stormed out,
not looking back.
