- 6.
Outside, we looked at each other and started
laughing.
<
“That was amazing! I wanted to yell at him
ages ago. I don’t know what you saw in him.
He’s poor, entitled, and can’t listen to anyone
else. He’s so high–and–mighty, but he’s
insecure as hell. You can fake being nice, but
you can’t fake being tall, handsome, and rich,
you know?”
Then my friend poked me, all secretive. “Why
don’t you go out with my brother? I mean, my
parents think he’s gay or something, just
because he won’t get married.”
I rolled my eyes. Six years of giving my all,
only to end up like this. Once bitten, twice
shy. I couldn’t think about dating right now.
My friend didn’t push it. She said if I ever
changed my mind, she’d make her brother
く
I thought it was over. Then, a few days later, I
got a message from Ashley, inviting me to
meet up. She also sent a picture of her and
Mark holding hands.
“Pam, Mark and I are together! Thanks for
letting us be together. Let’s meet up
sometime, we have something to tell you.”
I didn’t want to see them, but I also wanted to
know what those two were up to, so I said
yes.
I sent my friend the address. “If things get
weird, text me.”
“Okay, boss. Mission accepted.”
Ashley was nice enough to pick a coffee shop
I walked in and saw her, all doe–eyed and
leaning on Mark’s shoulder. Mark was wiping
her tears with a tissue.
He awkwardly pulled away when he saw me.
“Get it over with,” I said, annoyed.
Ashley pulled out a stack of papers. “Have a
look, Pam.”
“June 28, 2023: Skirt, $699.”
“July 2, 2023: Transfer, $2000.”
“July 4, 2023: $52 venmo.”
I was confused. “What’s this supposed to
be?”
It was a list of transactions between Mark
and me.
“Pam, you guys broke up. We added up how
much Mark spent on you, and it’s
$108,653.56. How are you going to pay us
back?”
Chapter 2
I couldn’t believe my ears. Was this a joke?
My ex, bringing his new girlfriend to shake me
down for money he spent on me when we
were dating? Only Mark would pull some BS
like that.
“Pam, try to see it from my perspective.
Ashley’s got these loan sharks breathing
down her neck. For the sake of our six years
together, just Venmo me the money, okay?”
L
I just laughed, a crazy, over–the–top laugh.
“And what if I tell you to pound sand?”
