After Maya left, the apartment felt empty. The
fight had taken a lot out of me, and I started
to feel sleepy. I fell asleep on the couch.
I woke up to voices at the door.
There was talking and the sound of a lock
being picked.
I thought Maya was back, and rubbed my
eyes as I walked over.
“You’re back—”

My voice died in my throat.
Emily nodded to the locksmith, then turned to

“Ethan, your mother’s worried about you.”
I grabbed the fruit bowl and threw it.
“Get out!”
This time, Emily’s eyes were filled with
concern. She stepped closer, and my heart
started to pound. The nausea hit me again. I
tried to get out of there, but Emily reached
out and grabbed my arm.
The moment she touched me, I blacked out.
