Calvin never did anything like this for me. In the past, he wouldn’t even let me sleep in. Every morning, he would shake me awake and demand that I make breakfast for him. But now, things were different.
Jonathan was so much better than Calvin.
After breakfast, I cleaned the house from top to bottom. When I saw the neglected garden outside, I decided to turn the soil and plant some vegetables.
Just as I was about to go buy some seeds, I saw Calvin approaching with Jennie. They were
carrying a bag of candy.
How ridiculous.
I had handed out wedding candy yesterday, and today they were copying me. They got
together so quickly!
That beating I gave them the other day was definitely worth it. I snorted coldly, not interested in dealing with them.
But Calvin shamelessly called out to me, “Rebekah, I’m getting married! Have some candy!”
I glanced at him and flatly refused.
“No thanks. I don’t want to jinx myself in case you two end up divorced.”
Jennie glared at me fiercely. “What nonsense are you talking about? You’re just jealous!”
I looked at her and slowly said, “I threw him away, and you went crawling to pick him up. If
that’s not bad luck, I don’t know what is. If you don’t mind, that’s your business. But I sure do.
“But it’s fine. You finally got what you wanted, right? Enjoy it. I won’t get in your way.”
“Rebekah, don’t be so petty. It’s just about celebrating a wedding. Do you really have to talk
like that?”
Calvin frowned, clearly displeased. He seemed ready to argue.
I scoffed. “Not this time. But I promise I’ll take one at your next wedding!”
With that, I turned and walked away, leaving him fuming, his face dark as iron. Not my
problem. If he was mad, so be it.
Not wanting to waste more words on me, the two of them left.
I noticed that most of the neighbors politely accepted their candy.
But that night, when they set up a big feast to celebrate, not a single guest showed up.
Jennie was livid.
Our houses were right next to each other, so I could hear her throwing things and shouting inside. Meanwhile, Jonathan and I were having the time of our lives.
I couldn’t stop grinning as I counted Jonathan’s salary and allowances for the month,
planning to start a small business for extra income.

He was already well off, with over ten thousand dollars in savings.

When I saw the numbers in his bankbook, I was genuinely shocked. Jonathan explained tha since he had been single for so long, he never had much to spend money on.
He wasn’t the type to crave material things. He had been eating in the mess hall for years,
never caring about how the food tasted as long as he was full.
I thought back to the spaghetti he made last time. Yeah, that made sense. He barely spent
anything, so his savings had grown over time.
I never imagined life with him would be this good.
I put away the money and the bankbook, snuggled into Jonathan’s arms, and listened to the
loud arguments from next door. With a satisfied smile, I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
The days that followed were even better. Calvin and Jennie were constantly fighting, never moment of peace.
I had always known Jennie wasn’t the type to manage a household. Every time she got her
paycheck, she spent most of it on new outfits from head to toe before even thinking about food.
After two months without sending money home, Calvin’s older brother’s family couldn’t take
it anymore. They came all the way from their hometown to the base.
I had just come back from grocery shopping when I ran into Calvin’s brother’s wife, Sally Gallagher.
When she saw the ribs in my bag, she stormed right up to me. “Rebekah, you’re shameless! Living in luxury while refusing to send us any money!
Come with me. We’re going to find Calvin!
I need to ask him what kind of wife he married!”
