By the end of the year, I was pregnant. Jonathan took extra care of me, always checking in and making sure I was comfortable.
One time, he saw a pothole on the road and worried that I might trip. So he grabbed a bucket of cement and spent the whole night filling in every single pothole in the entire residential area.
The neighbors all said I was blessed to have such a husband. Every time Jennie heard this, she would sneer sarcastically. I never indulged her; after all, she brought this upon herself.
Jonathan applied for a piece of land, and I expanded my little yard. He even helped me set up a greenhouse using plastic sheets, and soon, fresh vegetables were growing in abundance. I
took them to the market to sell whenever I had time.
Fresh vegetables were scarce in northern winters. My produce was pricey, but people were willing to pay for the freshness. In just one month, I made several hundred dollars from selling
vegetables.
My neighbors came to me, eager to learn how to grow their own crops.
I didn’t keep any secrets. I shared everything I knew and helped spread the technique. To
show their gratitude, they even applied for a subsidy for me.
I used the money to prepare for my child’s future. Jennie was so jealous that her eyes turned red. She wanted to say something snide, but the neighbors shut her down before she had the
chance.
By now, I had learned my lesson. Whenever I had something good, I made sure to share it
with my neighbors.
Besides, with Jonathan’s reputation, everyone treated me with respect.
Jennie tried to cause trouble twice, but each time, she was put in her place. Eventually, she
learned her lesson and stopped provoking me.
When she was six months pregnant, Calvin hit her.
No one expected that Jennie had actually started an affair with a worker from the steel factory, all for the sake of some new clothes.
She lied to the man, telling him she had an older brother in the barracks and that she was
currently living in the military base.
The man believed her and even came looking for her.
That was when he discovered that Jennie was actually married to Calvin. He caused a huge
scene at the barracks, even threatening to sue Jennie for fraud!
It turned out that Jennie had taken more than two hundred dollars from him, promising that she would go home to file the paperwork so they could get married.
Wiley had to step in to mediate. Calvin had to compensate the man, but he refused to stov D with Jennie any longer. He wanted a divorce.
Jennie wouldn’t have it. If she got divorced after losing her first husband, then no one would provide for her.

The two of them ended up having a heated argument, but in the end, it was Wiley who managed to calm things down.
When my child turned one month old, Jonathan was overjoyed. He invited his closest friends
over for a celebration.
Calvin came too, even bringing a silver necklace for the baby.
After having too much to drink, he staggered over to me, his eyes red. “Rebekah, I regret it.” Before he could say another word, Jonathan grabbed him by the collar and tossed him out. “My daughter’s full–month celebration, and you’re trying to steal my wife? Let me tell you. Whatever road you choose, you better walk it to the end!”
Calvin said nothing. His face was dark as he turned and went home, only to unleash his anger on Jennie once more.
Jennie screamed for help. Even Wiley showed up.
That night was absolute chaos. Jennie sobbed, lamenting her misfortune, and insisted on getting a divorce, but Calvin refused.
“Jennie, you were the one who said you had no one after your husband died, that you needed someone to take care of you. And now you want a divorce? That’s not happening!
You destroyed my home, broke up my family, and now you think you can just leave? No way!” Wiley couldn’t say much after hearing that. He simply advised Calvin to live a good life. Calvin agreed, but from then on, he became more and more violent. Jennie was constantly
beaten.
If she didn’t cook, she got beaten. If the food didn’t taste good, she got beaten. If she did laundry, she got beaten. If she didn’t wash it properly, she got beaten.
She couldn’t take it anymore and came running to me.
“Rebekah, I regret it. I don’t want this man anymore. Can I give him back to you?”
Her eyes darted toward Jonathan as she spoke. I held my baby and let out a cold laugh. “Give him back? You were the one who seduced him away from me in the first place. Now you don’t want to live with him anymore, and that has nothing to do with me.”
“And one more thing. Keep your eyes on yourself. If you dare look at my man again, I’ll gouge
