Chapter 10
I could somewhat understand his father’s mindset.
He understood that even if Alaric’s mother resigned herself to staying with him for a lifetime, she was never truly happy.
This marriage was far less happy than he had imagined.
So he couldn’t tolerate Alaric finding happiness.
Alaric getting the love he longed for so easily made him feel frustrated and even angry.

He kept emphasizing to me that Alaric inherited his flaws. And he kept instilling negative thoughts in Alaric.
The surveillance showed his last words to Alaric before leaving. “Son, just watch, as long as you’re alive, one day you’ll lose control and treat her like I treated your mother.
“By then, your mother’s present will be her future.”
Reading this, I let out a cold laugh.
So it turned out this man clearly knew that his wife, Alaric’s mother, had suffered so much that her experience was enough to serve as a threat.
Alaric didn’t want me to live like that. He feared hurting me and

despised the dark traits in his bloodline.
Under extreme provocation, he chose to end himself.
“Have you realized the difference between you and him?”
I crouched by the bed, looking straight into Alaric’s reddened
eyes.
“When he found out your mother left, he only resorted to coercion, threats, or even imprisonment–such despicable
means.

“But you only hurt yourself.”
I held his right hand, fingers interlocked.
“Babe, would someone like you hurt me?”
Alaric’s Adam’s apple quivered, his eyes filled with pain.
“But I’m afraid… Eileen, you’re so wonderful and proud. I’m scared you’ll become like my mother…”
“We won’t.”
I promised again, “We will be happy.”
“Yeah, humans have dark urges. But what makes us human is choosing not to act on them.”
“You’d rather die than hurt me that’s the ultimate self-control

“We’re not animals in the jungle anymore. We’ve evolved way past that.”
I held his gaze. “Trust me on this, okay?”
“I’m here because I’m crazy about you. That’s it. That’s the whole fucking reason.”
“Eileen…”
“My love,” I repeated it with utmost sincerity. “Please believe
- me.
“I’ve been in many relationships, and I’ve long become indifferent to love. I also despise those arrogant, misogynistic
men.
“If I hadn’t met you, I probably wouldn’t fall in love again.”
Just like in my past life, dying alone on an adventure.
When I was young, I had too many relationships, and everything just felt dull.
Until I met Alaric.
He treated me like a queen, perfect in every way, acting like some awkward puppy around me.
I started feeling sorry for him, and ended up falling hard.
Chapter 10
Everything just happened naturally.
No girl in her right mind could resist that.
I arranged to meet Alaric’s father.

In the cafe, I locked eyes with him and asked, “Your wife was a diplomat, right?
“Killing it on the world stage, all class and power.”
He squinted his eyes, saying, “Why are you bringing this up?”
“Now she’s just a fat housewife, brain gone soft, can’t keep up. Makes you sick.”
“You loved her fire, not this nagging bitch she’s become, right?”
“Shut up!” He wanted to interrupt me.
I kept smiling. “Funny thing is – you did this to her.”
Maybe he’s got side action, wouldn’t shock me.
Hot love died quick when reality hit.
Bet he hated it – got everything he wanted, still ain’t perfect.
“Let Alaric go.
“He’d have enough from your shit show with his mom. Don’t dump your baggage on him.

“If you won’t play nice…”

I paused, then continued with a cold smirk, “I’m only civil ‘cause you’re his dad.
“You hurt him, I’ll end you.”
He didn’t rage. Just collapsed in his chair, looking lost.
“Thinking if your wife had my balls, things would be different?
“You’re wrong.
“If I met someone like you, we’d both go down in flames.
“Face it you’re poison to any woman you touch.”
—
That got him.
He jumped up, ready to throw hands.
My bodyguard stopped him, and a physical altercation broke out between them.
A fifty–year–old man being pinned to the ground by a bodyguard was truly a shame.
I laughed, pouring hot coffee on his head.
“Listen up, old man. I’m not your doormat wife.
Chapter 10
“One more time. Stay away from Alaric.
“Or I’ll make you wish you had.”
