Chapter 2
Winston had a high sex drive.
Disciplined and restrained during the day, he asked for a lot at night.
In recent years, his stress has skyrocketed, forcing him to speak and act meticulously, leaving no room for error. That gradually shut him off.
Only in the tender moments of the night, when he panted by my ear, could I feel that he was still with me; he was still the same boy who once blushed at the sight of me.
We were classmates in a master’s program, and he was the one who pursued me.
He was a cold and aloof guy, yet his eyes were filled with admiration and his voice trembled nervously when he talked to
- me.
And so, I fell for him quickly.
Later, I became a psychology teacher.
He started as a salaried lawyer and worked his way up to partner, becoming a nationally renowned divorce lawyer with an annual income in the tens of millions.

In terms of personality, we had many similarities:

Both of us were emotionally stable, rational and pragmatic. We both valued living a good life and were willing to fight for our future.
I had a stable and respectable job, balancing my work and life; he was successful, advancing rapidly in his field.
During our eight years of marriage, we’d been respecting each other and progressing. We had a condo worth millions of dollars. Moreover, our son was regarded as a prodigy.
Basically, we were living the life that many people dreamed of.
But half a year ago, something about him had changed.
He developed a habit of night running.
He used to go out at 8 p.m., come back at 9 p.m., and spend half an hour with me and our son after showering, never missing it.
But six months ago, he began running at 7 p.m. and came back at 10 p.m.
Winston seemed very tired when he returned. And he went straight to bed after taking a shower. Naturally, he got no more time for us.
I asked him why his night runs were getting so long.
He just pressed his lips together and said, “The case has no

leads. Staying out longer helps clear my mind.”
I got it–mental work could be more tiring than physical labor.
Then, out of nowhere, he seemed to lose interest in intimacy.
I figured it was stress messing with his body. Worried about hurting his pride, I kept quiet about it, but deep down, I was really concerned.
So, after he got injured and ended up in the hospital, I pushed him to take a break from work and focus on recovering.
I even had the doctor do a full check–up on him.
But now, it seemed like things weren’t what I thought….
I lay back in bed, staring at the ceiling in the dark.
His words just now felt unfamiliar, and his expression made it
seem even more unreal.
After I suffered two major blows today, my curiosity somehow outweighed the sadness and anger I should have felt.
I was more than curious.
Who exactly was he secretly seeing?
What was it about her that turned Winston, who had been rational and aloof over the years, into someone so strange lo me?

I needed to get to the bottom of it.
So, the next night, I put sleeping pills in his milk.
