I laughed.
He’d already decided I was guilty and he was
going to protect me?

“Chad, I don’t need anyone’s protection.”
“I didn’t start the fire. You’re free to have
people investigate.”
Chad bit his lip again, looking torn.
“You’re a grown woman, can’t you act as
mature as Brittany for once?”
Brittany shot me a look full of venom but
quickly turned to victim mode.
“If you think that makes sense, then I am
willing to forgive her,” she said. “I just don’t
want her to hurt me again.”
“You promised my parents that I will never be
put in danger…”
Г
I gave up and looked at the both of them.
Chad looked at Brittany and seemed to make
a decision.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t let Brittany be harmed.”
Then, he left with Brittany.
The door slammed in front of me.
That was Chad.
He said he was helping me, but he thought I
was guilty.
He apologized before locking me in a jail.
Ridiculous.
I was locked up for two days.
No food, no water.
I didn’t have to ask if Brittany was involved.
Because she was a hero’s daughter, she
always had people defending her.
Everyone took care of her and hated me for
- it.
I didn’t even do anything.
I remembered the day I saw Brittany trip into
the street.
I hadn’t seen through her plan yet, and I saw
her as a scared little girl.
I froze and dropped the chicken soup I had
made for her. I burned my leg in the process.
Then Chad pushed me onto the sidewalk.
Brittany cried, “Why did you do that?”
Chad screamed into a tree and took me
home.
I asked to see the camera, but he left me.
Before he left, he said, “You already hurt
Brittany. She’s going to think that I don’t trust
her. I care for her like a sister, why are you so
hostile?”
A tear dripped down my face.
Next. I saw Brittany trip on the steps.
Г
Chad gave me a cold look and said, “I told
you to leave her alone. Take her to the
hospital.”
Before they left, Brittany winked at me.
That day, I decided that I wanted to get a
divorce.
That same day, I found out I was pregnant.
