No matter what Zoey’s intentions were, Eleanor’s only thought was to stay away–stay as far away as possible.
Sensing Eleanor’s wariness, Zoey grew irritated. Ignoring her refusal, she lunged forward and grabbed Eleanor’s hand, trying to force the earrings onto her.
“Take them. Just accept them. Don’t be polite.”
“I said no. Let go of me…”
Eleanor had imagined dozens of possible scenarios, even considering the awful possibility that Zoey might try to force her into an abortion, making her the villain in a tragic story.
But she never expected Zoey to actually push her into the lake.
The Davis family’s artificial lake was deep, and in an instant, the ice–cold water engulfed Eleanor.
She struggled frantically, trying to shout, “Help…”
But as soon as she opened her mouth, water rushed in, drowning her words. She couldn’t get a single complete sentence out.
Eleanor thought she was done for, but then, suddenly, Zoey’s voice rang out.
“Help! Eleanor’s drowning!”
Zoey’s scream drew people’s attention.
But by then, Eleanor’s coat had absorbed so much water that it weighed her down. She could barely struggle anymore as her body sank further.
Just when she thought she couldn’t hold on any longer, a figure plunged into the water and lifted her up with strength.
Eleanor coughed up water, her vision blurry, and as she gazed at the man who had pulled her to safety, she saw him–Elijah.
His head was lowered, hair dripping with water, his eyes fixed intently on her, his gaze laced with a dangerous crimson edge.
“Elijah… Elijah,” he said, calling her name in a way she had never heard before, filled with urgency.
“Hurts…” Eleanor whispered, her hand instinctively going to her stomach as she glanced down.
The beige knit dress she wore had a faint stain of blood.
“Damn it. My period came,” Eleanor thought bitterly.
She had never suffered from cramps before, but the pain was so overwhelming that she passed out.
When Eleanor regained consciousness, the pain in her abdomen had subsided.

But as soon as she turned, she was startled to see Elijah sitting at her bedside.
His face was cold, his eyes emotionless. He spoke in a soft tone, “You’re not pregnant.”
Eleanor nodded, her voice steady. “I told you, I can’t be carrying your child.”

Elijah’s fingers curled into a fist on his lap, his voice heavy. “Since you’re fine, there’s no need to pursue the matter with Zoey. She says it was an accident–you fell into the lake by mistake.”
“What did you just say?”
Eleanor’s voice suddenly became sharp, like a balloon bursting, her words trembling.
Elijah didn’t look at her. He stood up, his movements deliberate and controlled. “That’s all I had to say. Don’t speak about things you shouldn’t.”
“I’m asking you what you mean! Do you really think it was an accident? What if I was pregnant? Do the consequences just… get swept under the rug like that?”
Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she clutched the blanket, trying to steady herself. She met his gaze. her eyes filled with sorrow and rage.
Elijah, wrapped in his black coat, stood in stark contrast against the white walls, his presence dark and oppressive, like a ghost.
“It was indeed an accident. And there is no what if.”
Eleanor, pale and stiff, lay back on the bed, not even noticing when Elijah left.
Her heart, which had just begun to heal, broke all over again, the wounds tearing open as if she were reliving the moment she lost Ellie in her past life.
“It’s fine. It won’t happen again… it won’t happen again…”
She whispered hoarsely to herself, but the tears fell anyway, unbidden.
The door opened, and Zoey walked in, smiling.
“Crying? Did Elijah leave you?”
Eleanor took a deep breath, lifting her head to meet Zoey’s smug expression. “So what?”
Zoey stood at the foot of the bed, clucking her tongue. “I knew you weren’t pregnant. I wouldn’t have wasted my time otherwise. But… how was the cold lake water? Tasty?”
“I’m not pregnant, but you and Elijah have been together for so long, and yet you still can’t get pregnant? Jayden lost his son years ago, and he desperately wants a large family. You’ve been trying for over three years and still can’t, to the point you’d need to visit a fertility clinic. “Is it you who’s infertile or Elijah? If there’s something you’re hiding, you better speak up. Otherwise, Jayden will never let you into the family.”
Eleanor deliberately let her gaze fall to Zoey’s belly.
She wasn’t wrong about Jayden’s thoughts. The reason Jayden disliked Lily was partly because Lily had injured her body giving birth to Eleanor and couldn’t have more children.
Monica had only one son, Jaxen. If Elijah married a woman who couldn’t bear children, Jayden would

never approve.
After noticing Eleanor’s gaze, Zoey instinctively covered her stomach.
That gesture struck Eleanor as odd.
In her past life, because she and Elijah had married first, Zoey had run off with a child.
But now, there was no obstacle between them. Zoey announcing her pregnancy and marriage to Elijah seemed like a natural progression.
