His arm was in a cast, and even sitting up was a struggle.
Eleanor quickly reached out, but hesitated, afraid to hurt him.
“Jaxen…” Her voice wavered, a lump forming in her throat as guilt gnawed at her.
If it weren’t for her, Jaxen wouldn’t be lying here like this.

Jaxen looked at her, and with some effort, pulled her down to sit on the edge of the bed. He reached up and gently wiped the corner of her eye.
The late autumn night was bitterly cold, and Eleanor wasn’t dressed warmly. As she’d rushed over, her hair had become slightly disheveled, a few strands sticking to her damp lashes, making her already red, tear- filled eyes even more captivating.
His hand lingered on her cheek, almost reluctant to pull away, and with a soft smile, he tried to reassure her. “It’s really nothing. Want me to get up and walk around?”
Eleanor quickly grabbed his hand, stopping him. “Don’t move. You’re acting like a child, joking around when you’re injured.”
He gazed at her, his lips curving into a quiet smile, but for a brief moment, his eyes flickered past her, as if looking at something behind her.
Eleanor sensed it and was about to turn around when, as if he had lost all strength, Jaxen collapsed toward her.
Instinctively, she reached out and caught him.
Jaxen wrapped his arms around her, gently patting her back, his voice low and soothing. “Don’t worry. I’m fine.”
Eleanor thought it was just a comforting gesture, nothing serious, and didn’t push him away.
But the next second, Jaxen’s hold tightened, and his breath brushed against the side of her face, tinged with an almost tender warmth.
“Eleanor, when the accident happened… I was really scared. I was afraid I’d never see you again. I could only call your name through the pain. And when I opened my eyes, you were right there in front of me. I really missed you.”
It was the first time he had spoken so openly about his feelings, especially after Eleanor had previously avoided his subtle hints.
She froze for a moment, unsure how to react, her hand instinctively moving as if to push him away. But Jaxen held her tighter, his voice soft and pleading. “Eleanor, don’t push me away, okay?” Her hand hovered in the air, frozen, before it finally, reluctantly, rested on his back. “Okay.” A moment later, Jaxen loosened his hold just slightly, but didn’t let go.
With his uninjured hand, he gently ran his fingers through her hair, then cupped her face.

“There’s this special pastry in Luton City. I wanted to bring some back for you. I was just in a hurry,” Jaxen explained, offering no further details.
Eleanor noticed a flaw in his story. “Jaxen, the driver was behind the wheel. No matter how urgent you were, he wouldn’t risk your life like that…”
Jaxen’s eyes darkened, and he grasped her hand, interrupting her. “Eleanor, don’t ask. Some things are better left unsaid. Who am I to matter?”
He didn’t say more, but Eleanor understood.
Her gaze hardened, and she spoke with unwavering resolve. “Jaxen, I’ll help you.”
