Chapter 30
Veronica’s POV
It’s been three days and Orthon was yet to say a word to me. I knew it was because I declined his offer and chose to go back to Carter instead. It was a very stupid decision but I just had to.
So here I was, scrolling through my contact list to pick out Carter’s number. Unfortunately, I had long deleted it.
Lucky for me, I knew his number by heart. It was my speed dial if I was ever in trouble. Which by the way was very stupid then, because the Carter I knew then didn’t give two shits about me.
Shaking the thoughts off my head, I dialed the number and listened to it ring while staring at the pregnancy report in my hand.
He answered and I immediately started speaking.
“Carter, we need to talk. It’s very urgent and…
Η
“Who are you?” Meghan’s voice caught me off guard and I immediately hung up with a pounding heart. What was she doing with his phone?
Were they still close?
The thought of it made me reconsider my decision. What exactly was I going back to this man? My childhood was only rough because my mother was poor. I’m a billionaire heiress and if I…
The ringing of my phone interrupted my train of thoughts. I stared at the ID wondering if it was really Carter or still Meghan.
I swiped the answer button and decided to keep shut until the person at
the other end of the line spoke first.
“You know, I was wondering why that voice sounded so familiar…” Meghan’s statement made my blood run cold. “Veronica, isn’t it?” she chuckled and there was just something sinister about that laughter. “I see you survived…”
I didn’t say anything. My heart was pounding as I listened to her.
“I don’t know what you think you’re doing or what you’re planning to do but I want you to know that it is already too late. Just in case you have poor internet connection or somehow missed the news,” I could feel the smugness in her words. “Carter and I are engaged and we will be getting married very soon.
I didn’t fully process her words at first. Which Carter? The one who was helplessly begging me to get married?
“Just as you have managed to fake your death and stay hidden, I hope it remains that way because if I see you around my man, you will die for real!” She spat and the line went dead.
I remained frozen on the spot where I sat. Carter and Meghan were engaged? I immediately went online to confirm her claims and my jaw as the headlines dropped. It was on every influencer’s page. Carter’s grand proposal to Meghan.
I didn’t realise I was biting my life so hard until I felt the mettalic taste of blood. So once again I was the fool? Here I was thinking we could sort things out and he was already putting a ring in another woman’s finger. My heart ached so much that my eyes watered.
God, what is wrong with me? Why couldn’t I just move on from this man? To think that because of him, Orthon was pissed at me and wouldn’t even
see me.
Carter Grayson, I am definitely done with you and this whole charade.
Just as I came to that conclusion, a call from an unknown number came. Who is this now? I answered the phone and waited for the person to talk.
“Veronica?” He called and my body stiffened.
“Carter?! Carter!! How the fuck did you get my number!” I snapped as if! wasn’t the one who called him minutes ago.
“I overheard the conversation with Meghan but I want to promise you that it is nothing. I will never marry her!” I it is nothing. I will never marry her!” He said and I felt very disgusted.
“You won’t marry her but you went and propose to her before millions of people,” I hissed.
“I was forced,” he blurted desperately. “She threatened me with ant abortion and I had to give in to her. Look, the marriage doesn’t take place until childbirth. That will be my chance to take my baby from her. Please Veronica,” he pleaded.
His stupid excuses were even making me more angry.
“Veronica please come home, I miss you. If you were here with me, we would have known how to handle this issue together. I love you so much and I don’t know how else to prove it to when something keeps ruining the little efforts I’m making,” he sighed.
“It is the mess you created it,” my tone softened. “You should marry her.”
“No! You’re the only woman who deserves to be called my wife. Any other one is fucking slut!” He said and I found myself chuckling lightly.
“I see you haven’t changed, Carter,” I said, my voice carrying a mix of disdain and amusement. “Still blaming everyone else for your messes. You made your bed, now lie in it. You know, I was really considering coming back to you but you just ruined it.”
“Veronica, please…” His voice cracked, and for a moment, I almost felt
11
sorry for him. Almost. “I know I’ve screwed up, but I can fix this. We can fix this.”
“No. Carter.” I said firmly, cutting him off. “There is no
‘we.‘ Not anymore. You don’t get to make me your backup plan while you play house with Meghan. I deserve better than this. Better than you,
There was silence on the other end, and I could almost picture him, standing there, trying to come up with yet another excuse.
“Don’t say that.” he finally whispered. “I love you, Veronica. I always have.”
“Love?” I scoffed. “If this is your idea of love, Carter, I want no part of it.”
Before he could respond, I ended the call and blocked the number. I sat there for a moment, staring at the phone in my hand, my chest heaving as the weight of the conversation settled over me. A tear slipped down my cheek, but I quickly wiped it away. Enough was enough.
Just as I was about to set the phone down, another call came through… this time from Orthon. My heart leapt in surprise, but I quickly collected myself before answering. Finally!
“Orthon?” I said hesitantly.
“Veronica.” His deep voice sent a shiver down my spine. “We need to talk.”
“I know,” I replied softly. “I…”
“No,” he interrupted, his tone firm but not unkind. “Not over the phone. Meet me at the park in an hour.”
Before I could respond, the line went dead. I stared at the phone in disbelief. Orthon never left room for negotiation, did he?
Another call came in while I was packing up everything I wanted to use as evidence to show Carter and I answered without looking at the caller ID, because I already blocked Carter and Orthon was only one else I had on my phone.
“Orthon, please give me a second. I need to put away this pregnancy report safely. And I forgot to ask if we’re going out? I’m thinking jeans…”
“You’re pregnant?!” The exclamation caught me off guard as I looked at the ID. It was an unknown number with Carter’s freaking voice.
Oh God! What have I done?
“Answer me, Veronica! Are you pregnant? And who is responsible for it?”
