Chapter 35
Chapter 34
Do you want revenge?
Carter’s POV
“Do I know you?” I asked, barely able to keep the irritation from sepping off my voice. My head was literally steaming now and the last thing I needed was this one complicating things for me.
“I’m sorry I had to choose this dramatic way to meet you but I suppose you wouldn’t mind once I told you why I came looking?” She said confidently but I honestly wasn’t in the mood to entertain her games. I needed her to go straight to the point.
She took out her phone and after a few seconds, she handed it to me. I took it without knowing what to expect. However, the moment I saw the screen. I was stunned.
It was Veronica!
My eyes shifted to the woman before me then back to the screen. What
business did Veronica have with her?
“Do you recognize her?” She asked.
“Yes, this is my wife,” I answered. “How do you know that?”
A smirk played on her lips. “Oh, you are her husband. That is just perfect.”
“You haven’t answered my question,” I reminded her and her expression turned serious.
“Well, your slut of a wife has been sleeping with my husband for a while,” she said and I was stunned.
“I beg your pardon?” I snapped and her eyes hardened.
“Did I stutter? I said your wife has been hooking up with my husband, Meshach Peyton.” she said, shocking me even more.
There was no way she was talking about the Meshach Peyton I knew. Orthon’s teacher? How was that even possible?
I couldn’t even get a word out of my mouth. I just stared at her in shock. This was Meshach Peyton’s wife?
I wasn’t even surprised at that because he was a very private man and didn’t put his private life online but Veronica? How? I couldn’t even
understand.
“You don’t believe me?” She asked. “Well, are you aware that she is pregnant?”
My whole body immediately stiffened. There was just no way! I couldn’t even think at that moment. There was so much going through my mind. that it seemed like I couldn’t even think.
“You didn’t think the pregnancy was yours, did you?” She asked, then burst into laughter when I didn’t offer a response. “You poor thing! You know, normally, I won’t go out of my way because of a mere slut, but she crossed her boundaries. She had the audacity to move into my house with. that stupid pregnancy.
The words hit me like a double bullet. No wonder I wasn’t able to get to her. I combed the entire city and yet couldn’t find her because she was staying with Meshach Peyton. And Orthon knew about this?
It suddenly made sense why he was always going there. He knew about Veronica’s affair and became so defensive about her because his mentor
was involved. My first clenched, desperate to punch something.
My gaze flickered to her. “So why did you come to me?”
I was thankful that at least now, I knew where my wife was but I couldn’t understand why she came to meet me.
She crossed her arms, her expression sharp with a ruthless I wasn’t sure I wanted to experience. If she was indeed Meshach’s wife, I could only imagine the kind of power and influence she had at her fingertips.
“Why? Because I want your help,” she said simply, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“My help?” I repeated, incredulous. “Why in the world would I help you?”
I wasn’t even sure I could help her even if I wanted to. I mean she had it all.
Her lips curled into a humourless smile. “Because you’re in the same boat as me, Carter. Your wife is cheating on you with my husband. And while I could handle this mess on my own, it’s always easier with an ally. Especially one with as much to lose as I do.”
The words struck me in the heart like a blade.
I narrowed my eyes at her, my mind racing. She was bold, I’d give her that, but I wasn’t sure I trusted her. Still, there was no denying the weight of her accusations. If what she was saying was true, then everything I thought I knew about Veronica, about us, was a lie.
“And what exactly do you propose we do?” I asked warily.
She leaned forward, her tone cold and calculating. “Expose them. Make sure the whole world knows what they’ve been up to. I want my husband to regret every single decision he made that led him to her. And I imagine
you’d want the same for your wife.”
Her words hung heavy in the air, the venom in her voice unmistakable.
I
But as much as I hated what Veronica had allegedly done, I wasn’t sure I could go down that path. Public humiliation wasn’t my style, no matter how much pain she’d caused me.
“I’m not interested in revenge,” I said evenly, though my voice wavered slightly. “If this is true, all I want is the truth. I need to hear it from her.”
Her smirk faltered, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of vulnerability in her eyes. “You think she’ll tell you the truth?” she scoffed. “Men like Meshach and women like your wife–they’re experts at hiding the truth. You’ll get nothing but lies and excuses.”
“That’s my risk to take,” I said firmly, handing her phone back to her. “If you came here looking for a partner in vengeance, you came to the wrong person.”
She stared at me for a long moment, her eyes searching mine. Then, without another word, she turned on her heel and began to walk away. But just as she reached the door of her car, she paused.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you, Carter,” she said over her shoulder. “When the truth finally breaks you, don’t come crawling to me.”
And with that, she was gone, leaving me alone with a storm of emotions and questions I didn’t know how to answer.
“One more thing,” she said suddenly and took out her card from her purse. “Here’s my business card. Call me when you change your mind.”
I wanted to decline but for some reason, I took it. I needed to get everything straight first, then I would decide what to do.
