Chapter 51
The Threat
Carter’s POV
I was in utter disbelief. There was just no way this was real. Veronica, the daughter of a billionaire? My Veronica?
I was too stunned to speak or even move. How was that even possible? She had been with me all these years and there was absolutely no sign that she was even from a middle–class family, not talk of upper class. I knew her grandmother. I saw how much Veronica suffered and worked hard just to pay that woman’s medical bills.
It was almost impossible that she would be the heiress to billions of dollars and still watch her die. Why would his wife come complaining to me also? Or was it all a trap I fell for?
Fuck!
I didn’t get to finish the thought when the guards marched towards us, ready to throw us out.
Cameras were up and lights flashed. This was most likely the most embarrassing moment of my life.
“Wait… you can’t send us out,” Meghan said suddenly and I wished she would just keep shut. “Veronica knows us. I am her very good friend, and Carter is her husband. We were just playing a prank on her. She knows that.”
Meghan’s desperate words made me wish that the ground would open up and swallow me instantly.
I looked at Veronica but the eyes that once gazed at me with love were now ice cold. Emotionless. I knew there and then that she would never forgive me for humiliating her like this.
There was no need to beg her anymore. I just needed to let her go and accept my fate, yet it was easier thought than done.
They began pulling me and I decided to speak, “Mr Peyton. Mr Peyton please… we have business to discuss together. We are going to be partners!”
“Partners?” He repeated with amusement. “And who told you that fake news? That we would be partners? Peyton Firms cannot partner with someone who can barely manage his home.”
The words hit me hard and I immediately stopped fighting the guards as they dragged both me and Meghan out.
I was certain it was going to be all over the news soon and I would be subjected to mockery by trolls for a very long time.
I didn’t know how I was going to manage that. Especially when my grandfather heard the news. He had explicitly warned me about keeping Meghan in my life and now this?
“Carter? What do we do now? We just got embarrassed before almost a hundred high–profile guests. There is no way we can leave this place, we need to get back at them somehow!” Meghan suddenly and my head snapped to her. My fist was clenched so hard that I almost punched her in the face.
Why the fuck did I even let her come with me in the first place? It would have been better if she stayed home with my mother.
This was all her fault!
“Carter? Are you just going to stare at me like that? You won’t say

anything?” She demanded.
I took a deep breath, my hands trembling as I tried to rein in the surge of anger boiling in me. Meghan’s voice grated against my nerves, and I couldn’t stand the sight of her anymore. Her impulsiveness had cost me everything.
“This is all on you, Meghan!” I snapped, my voice low but sharp enough to cut through her incessant whining. “I told you to stay out of this, but no, you had to be here, didn’t you? You had to make it worse!”
She blinked at me, her eyes widening in shock. “Me? How is this my fault? You’re the one who wanted to come here! You asked me to be your date! You’re the one chasing after Veronica like some pathetic…”
“Shut up!” I bellowed, my voice echoing in the empty street. The guards had thrown us out so fast that my head was still spinning. So what if I invited her? Couldn’t she keep her stupid mouth shut until everything was over?
I glared at her, my jaw tightening. “You’ve done enough damage for one night. Just… go.”
“Go?” She laughed bitterly, throwing her hands up in disbelief. “You’re seriously blaming me for this? Carter, you’re the one who humiliated. yourself! You’re the one who can’t move on from Veronica. Maybe if you weren’t so obsessed with her, you’d realize she’s been playing you all along!”
Her words stung, but I refused to let her see it. I turned away, running a hand through my hair as I tried to think of my next move. The weight of what had just happened crushed me, suffocating me. Veronica had looked at me like I was a stranger, no, worse. Like I was beneath her.
And maybe I was.

“Carter,” Meghan said, her voice softer now. “Listen to me. We can fix this. We just need to…”
“There’s no ‘we,‘ Meghan,” I interrupted coldly. “Not anymore. I’m done. with you, and I’m done with this mess. Go back to wherever you came from, and don’t contact me again.”
She stared at me, her mouth opening and closing in shock.
“And what the hell is that supposed to mean?” She fired back.
“You’re not deaf, you heard me! Get the hell out of my life! You have ruined things enough for me with that stupid pregnancy of yours! I am about to become a laughing stock!” I gritted.
“Wow! Just wow! You brought out fake photos from wherever, paid someone to have it displayed and somehow it is my fault that you got uncovered?” She stepped towards me, her eyes darkening like the demon she was. “Listen to me very clearly, Carter. Our wedding is next month and you are going to follow it to the end. My child will grow up with all the love he deserves and you will treat me right!”
“Or what, Meghan?” I challenged. I didn’t even care that we were beginning to attract the attention of passersby
“Trust me, you don’t want to know what I will do to you, Carter!” She said darkly. “You are welcome to dare me!”
She made to walk away but I caught her arm, dragging her back forcefully.
“Don’t you dare walk out on me, Meghan!” I barked. “You will stand there and listen…”
I didn’t even get to complete the words when she suddenly threw herself on the floor like I had shoved her.

And the next thing, she burst out screaming like I was about to kill her.
Chapter 52
Arrested
Carter’s POV
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing Meghan, get off the floor now!” I hissed but she began rolling and sobbing.
“Help me please… he’s going to kill me. Please help me…” she sobbed, drawing even more attention.
People began to gather and they were already looking at me like I was some form of monster.
“You need to stop this, Meghan. People are watching, you’re going to make them think I’m abusing you!” I whisper–yelled but she didn’t even
listen to me.
I don’t know what her plan but it was definitely not looking good for me.
A man stepped forward from the growing crowd, his eyes full of suspicion. He was tall, broad–shouldered, and wearing a suit that screamed authority. “Is there a problem here?” he asked, his voice calm.
but firm.
“No!” I exclaimed, holding up my hands in a placating gesture. “There’s no problem. She’s just being dramatic-”
“He hit me!” Meghan screamed, cutting me off. She clutched her stomach and moaned as if in pain. “He’s threatening me and our baby! Please, don’t let him near me!”
The man frowned, his gaze shifting to me, sharp and assessing. “Sir, step
back.”
“I didn’t touch her!” I protested, my voice rising. “She’s lying. She’s trying to-”

“Sir, I said step back!” His voice was steel now, and two uniform approached, their hands hovering near their holsters.
This was spiraling out of control. I looked down at Meghan, who was now curled up on the pavement, sobbing loudly. Her crocodile tears were winning the crowd over, and I could see the judgment in their eyes.
“You don’t understand,” I tried again, my voice desperate. “She’s doing this on purpose! She’s trying to ruin me!”
