When Gary emerged, Susan followed,
approaching me with false apology.
“Molly, I’m so sorry. I thought you didn’t need
much money in the country. I was saving for
Gary’s car, so I only gave you three hundred
dollars a month… You’re not mad, are you?”
Her explanation was laughable, but it was
intentional. She was mocking me. I was Gary’s
wife, and I got three hundred bucks a month,
living in the country. She had control of over
twenty thousand dollars a month, and spent it
freely. Lily was Gary’s real daughter, going to
a terrible school, unable to afford ice cream.
Chloe, not even Gary’s blood, attended an
elite school, had all the snacks she wanted,
Susan was trying to provoke me, to get her
way.
く
But she failed. I wouldn’t fall for it. I was done
with Gary.
I looked at Susan calmly. “You must feel so
put upon.”
“Oh no, it’s my luck to have Gary take care of
us,” Susan said smoothly, accepting the
compliment. She had to be thick–skinned to
do what she did.
I didn’t bother arguing. “You’re feeling ‘put
upon‘ because you want to be his wife
officially, right? If I divorce Gary, you can
marry him and have everything, no more
‘putting up with things.“”
Susan didn’t answer; she looked at Gary.
Gary stammered, “Molly, I’ve explained.
everything. Why are you still making a fuss?
Why can’t you understand me and Susan?”
