- 5.
I was just reaching the airport when Mark
called.
“You could see all along, couldn’t you?”
Mark’s voice was shaking.
“Are you home right now? If so, turn on the
TV, the answer is there.”
I pulled out my phone and opened the home
security app. Mark was back home.
Half an hour earlier, my eye doctor had called,
wondering why I hadn’t told Mark my sight
was back.
I laughed, and dodged the question.
On the phone, I saw Mark kneeling by the
coffee table, tears streaming down his face.
He turned on the TV, and every channel
showed him and Brittany in bed, the images
so explicit they were unbelievable.
Mark picked up the phone, choked up, “Honey, you… you could see the whole time?”
“Did you ever give me a chance to tell you?
As soon as I got home, I saw you and your
secretary, it was you that broke your vows,
made her pregnant, I knew everything.”
“You signed the divorce papers, so this is
over, we’re done, you and I.”
Mark screamed, “I’m not getting a divorce, I’d
rather die.”
“You signed the papers, just this morning,
and you didn’t even read them.”
“Mark, stop lying to yourself, you changed,
you don’t love me anymore.
Mark looked at the papers on the coffee
table. “Honey, I’m so sorry, where are you? I’ll
get you, whatever you want, and I’ll make her
get an abortion.” Mark was on his knees,
pleading.
く
My heart was at peace.
I really was over Mark.
“Mark, it’s over, I’m moving on.”
The flight attendant’s voice announced my
boarding time, and I needed to hang up.
Mark was still begging me to come home.
I hung up, took out the SIM card and threw it
in the trash, and walked away.
Santa Fe was 2,000 miles away, and it took
two flights to get home.
