Chapter 6
I poured fuel on the fire. “You can’t really blame him. To you, he’s just a neighbor, but I’m carrying his child. Of course, Isaac cares more about our baby.”
Maria’s face twisted in fury before she suddenly collapsed.
The delivery room was in chaos. Taking advantage of the commotion, I slipped away. Nova, Isaac’s little lapdog, tried to stop me, but I shot her a sharp look. “Everyone here saw her give birth to a stillborn. Do you really want to take the risk of lying about it?”
That shut her up immediately. As I turned, I caught her reflection in the glass–she was secretly making a call–probably to Isaac.
But Isaac had just fallen down the stairs and was sprawled on the floor, barely able to move. If he hadn’t broken an arm, then it was definitely a leg. That coward, who was terrified of pain, wouldn’t be in any shape to answer the phone.
When I stepped out of the operating room, Hugh and Luna turned to me, eyes full of suspicion. “Didn’t you go in to give birth? Why are you out here?”
I smiled faintly, “Maria just delivered a stillborn. The doctors are busy trying to save her.”
Chapter 6
“What? A stillborn?” Hugh and Luna nearly collapsed from shock.
But Luna recovered quickly, her expression darkening. “Maria never let us go with her to prenatal checkups. Hugh, are you sure that baby was even yours?”
Hugh, still dazed from grief, hesitated. “What else could it be?”
Luna scoffed in frustration, “Didn’t you notice how unnaturally big her belly was? You’re gone for most of the year–she probably got knocked up by some other man and dragged you back at the last minule to cover for her.”
The truth was, Hugh’s return had been pure coincidence, not Maria’s doing.
But right now, he was too furious to think rationally. Luna’s words made too much sense, and the more he dwelled on it, the angrier he became. Without another word, he turned to storm inside and make Maria pay.
Just then, the doctors wheeled Maria out of the delivery room. She was still hysterical, yelling for someone to take the baby.
Nobody wanted to touch a stillborn. They all backed away, desperate for someone else to deal with it. I didn’t flinch. I had already lived through this nightmare once in my past life. But why should I take responsibility?
I met Maria’s gaze and asked coldly, “Why should I take your baby?”

Maria had a vicious smile. “Because he’s your husband’s child. Who else should raise him?”
Maria’s face contorted with rage. “I was humiliated by you, beaten by Luna, while Isaac–the pathetic coward you call a husband–hid in a hospital room packing your delivery bag.
“He ignored my calls while I was in labor. He even cursed me and the baby. And let’s not forget–it was him who came crawling to me first, hoping to share Hugh’s salary. Now that the baby’s dead, he wants to slink back to you and pretend none of this happened?
“He can dream! He was the one who betrayed me first. Laura, this baby is yours now. Take good care of him.”
Maria let out a crazed laugh as if she had completely forgotten the baby was already dead.
Luna wasn’t about to let it slide. The moment she heard the baby was Isaac’s, she turned to me and demanded, “Call Isaac over right now! If he really did this, he’d better be ready to pay up.”
