“Kara, Liam Stone was in a car accident,” my
assistant blurted.
“Where is he? What happened?”
“He was speeding and hit someone. The
victim is a woman named Bethany.”
I went to the police station, and saw a frantic
Liam, raving about Bethany being a liar, a con
artist.
He hadn’t tried to save his company because
he was broke.
After the stock crash, Liam stayed at the
く
office, neglecting even Bethany. She’d
realized this and secretly transferred his
money, buying a one–way ticket abroad. He
found out.
Bethany went to the airport; Liam chased her,
running her down.
“She was a complete fraud. She only wanted my money! I saw her messages with her ex- boyfriend. He went bankrupt and she came to
me for money. It was all a lie.

“Kara, you’re the only one who truly loved
- me. They were all liars. I’ll never trust anyone but you again.” He tried to touch me, but the
distance was too great.
“You’re wrong. That was seven years ago,
not now.
I left.
وو
Liam spent seven years in prison. I acquired
and absorbed his company.
Seven years is long, and short.
Г
I saw Liam again at my company’s gates, rummaging through the trash.
His hair was matted, his clothes filthy and
oversized, his feet and hands covered in
frostbite. It was winter, and he was only
wearing a thin shirt and flip–flops.
I felt a pang of sympathy, handing him my
sandwich.
He mumbled thanks.
Recognizing my voice, he froze, then fled. Leaving one flip–flop behind.
He was changed – timid, unconfident,
stripped of his arrogance. Life had worn him
down.
A disheveled man trailed behind him
eyed, clearly no good.

“He has a criminal record. Should I call the
police?” my assistant asked, nervously.
“No, it’s too much trouble. Let him handle his
own problems.”
Calling the police is good. Not calling the
police is not illegal. I’m a law–abiding citizen.
