Chapter 17
Me?

And so, half an hour passed.
My boss had tears and snot running down his face from the
- 45.
“Ma’am, is your cook in a bad mood today? This chili is way too spicy!”
My mother stood nearby, her expression calm and unchanged.
“If this chili wasn’t spicy, it would be called a sweet pepper. Mr. Knight, wouldn’t you agree?”
Compared to my boss’s irritation, Jasper remained much more. composed.
“Yes.”
My mom asked again, “How does Mr. Knight find the taste?”
“Not bad.”
My boss asked, “Not bad?” Then he served Jasper some other dishes, saying, “Try this one. I think their chef spilled the salt- it’s so salty I can barely stand it.”

My mother’s expression didn’t change.

“Our dishes here are traditionally this strong in flavor. Perhaps you’re just not used to it. What do you think, Mr. Knight?”
Jasper took a bite.
“It’s quite good.”
“Quite good? Jasper, are you possessed or is something wrong with your taste buds?” My boss continued to be furious.
Jasper glanced at him.
“Keep it down. You’re making a scene.”
My mom was shocked.
She had originally planned to teach Jasper a lesson, but found that her every attempt was like punching a pillow–completely ineffective.
She had no choice but to leave, cursing as she went.
When I went to the bathroom, my mom stopped me.
“Is Ryan’s father some kind of secret agent? How can he be so emotionally stable?”
“He’s always like that.”
“If Wending raised his son to be like this, his character must be

questionable too. Tell them to leave soon.”
“Okay.”

After using the bathroom, I was washing my hands when I saw Jasper vomiting in the toilet.
“What are you pretending for? Aren’t you the one who can’t handle spicy food?!” My boss teased him.
Later, on the way back, it was just Jasper and me. I couldn’t hold back anymore and asked him.
“If you can’t eat spicy food, why didn’t you say so earlier?”
He must have felt terrible.
We had originally gone to the hospital because of drinking.
Then my mom served extremely spicy food.
He smiled and said, “I could try it again sometime.”
Yeah, right.
“I’m sorry. My mom might have some misunderstandings.”
“What misunderstandings?”
I thought for a long time, feeling this was a knot in my heart that
I needed to untie, and finally decided to say it.

“She thinks Ryan and I broke up because you looked down on our family’s financial situation.”
He didn’t avoid my question at all.
“Theoretically speaking, social class is indeed an issue that needs attention and discussion. Different social classes can lead to various conflicts that accumulate and amplify over time. In reality, the probability of a happy marriage across classes is quite small.”
I took a deep breath.
How could he admit it so easily?
That condescending attitude of someone from a higher social class really hurt my fragile self–esteem.
“I want to get out.”
“We’re on an elevated highway right now.”
“I still want to get out.”
He sighed, “Don’t be ridiculous.”
I said, “Driver, please stop ahead,” while deliberately reaching for the door handle.
Every second in the same space with him was unbearable to me.
He must have been frightened.

“Uncle Liu, pull over please.”

After the car stopped, I got out and walked along the sidewalk.
Because there were cars behind them, they couldn’t stay parked there or they would cause a traffic jam.
The driver pulled away.
Jasper got out of the car and followed behind me.
