Chapter 4
Oliver.
I lifted my gaze to meet Oliver’s furrowed brow. He looked at me with disdain, turning his eyes away in disgust. “Karen Woodward, how did you let yourself get into this state?
“I told you long ago to stop interfering in my life. Why did you insist on getting close to me?
“Do you really think that just because you had my child, I would marry you? You’re dreaming. The only person I love is Cynthia.”
Hearing those words felt like my heart was being ripped apart.
Even though I had suspected his betrayal–being cornered by “Cynthia” in the delivery room was a clear sign–I still winced at his words meant to placate her, drawing a line between us.
We had loved each other for eight years.
From helping each other in a foreign land to struggling together when we returned to start a business, we had never given up on each other, even during the toughest times.
ow, with my father’s covert support, his company had successfully gone public, and his career was riving.
I had planned to reveal my true identity to him after the baby was born, never anticipating that he would rush to the top, betraying our eight–year relationship and being completely fooled by a counterfeit.
I glared at Oliver, pushing the baby I held forward. My voice trembled with emotion as I pleaded for a spark of paternal love from him. “Our child is dead, killed by that vile woman! If you’re a man, you should report this! Avenge our child!”
Oliver looked conflicted, staring at the child in my arms. He opened his mouth but couldn’t find the words
to say.
Seeing his hesitation, “Cynthia” slipped her arm around Oliver’s, smirking as she said, “Oliver, she’s just a shameless mistress, and her child is illegitimate.
“Don’t you want my dad’s investment? If he finds out you have an illegitimate child, he’ll never allow us to be together.”
Oliver gazed at “Cynthia“, ingratiating himself. “It was her scheming that led me to her bed. This child was merely a means for her to trap me. Even if it was born, I wouldn’t want it. Cynthia, you’ve solved this problem for me. I should thank you. There’s no way I’d listen to her and report this.”
Looking at the twisted truths spilling from Oliver’s mouth as he tried to gain an advantage by talking badly about me and our baby, I felt my last shred of affection for him evaporate.
When Oliver and I were together, my parents had vehemently opposed our relationship, insisting that as a pampered daughter of privilege, I was too good for someone like him–someone who wasn’t born of
money.
They warned me that if I insisted on being with him, I would surely regret it later.
I never expected their words to ring true. Now, not only did I regret my choice, but I also wanted to kill

this treacherous couple with my own hands.
I laughed bitterly at Oliver. “You’d even stoop to being an accomplice to the murder of your own flesh and blood just to enjoy a life of ease. You truly disgust me.
He glared at me, casting a hopeful glance at “Cynthia” before grabbing my wrist and dragging me outside.
“Karen, let’s just say I’ve wronged you, but I had no choice. She’s the daughter of a tycoon, and marrying her would save me fifty years of struggle.”
I violently yanked my arm free and shouted hoarsely, “What about our eight years together? What about our dead child?”
Oliver sighed, his brow still knitted in frustration. “It’s your fault for not seeing the truth. Consider yourself unlucky.”
Despair washed over me as I looked at him, realizing how foolish I had been to waste eight years of my youth on a man like him.
Clutching my baby tightly, I let out a hollow laugh, wanting to shout that I was the real daughter of a
tycoon.
Just as I opened my mouth, a sorrowful voice rang out. “Karen, I’m sorry I’m late…”
