“Yeah! Sammy loves you so much, I’m totally envious. Unlike me, the man ran off and now I have to raise this baby on my own,” Starla said, though her eyes were fixed on the hand Samuel had resting on my waist.
Seeing this, Samuel immediately urged me to get on with what I was doing.
Not wanting to waste any more time pretending, I grabbed my things and left.
I was there for an asset appraisal; I needed to sell the apartment where Starla was currently living.
Lately, I’d been cold toward Samuel and he started to suspect that I had figured out what was going on between him and Starla. He’d even followed me a few times.
When we got to my hometown and he saw the large “demolition” notice written on the wall of my house, he finally relaxed.

In the days that followed, Samuel became. even more attentive, constantly trying to make me happy in every way.
If I hadn’t known that he was after the demolition compensation, I might have actually been touched by his efforts.
One evening, just after I got off work, I
received a call from a friend.
“I found the person you asked me to check on.”
We immediately met up.
“That so–called best friend of yours is a repeat offender. She‘ s already seduced several wealthy businessmen and after getting caught a few times, she set her sights on your husband.”
My friend lit a cigarette, slowly exhaling the smoke and looked at me with a mix of
disdain, as if mocking my naivety.

during college and since I had fallen out
with my family over Samuel, Samuel didn’t know him.
“What about the baby she’s carrying….”
I glanced at the photos of Starla holding hands with various men, my expression hardening as I asked in a low voice.
“That’s not so easy to explain. According to my investigation, about eight months ago, she was still involved with a real estate company owner. His daughter caught wind of it, had her beaten up and that’s when it ended. Shortly after, Starla got pregnant,” Tonny said, tossing some hotel room photos onto the table, his face contorting with disgust, as if he’d just touched something filthy.
“When did she and Samuel get together?”
I continued to ask, hoping to get some clarity and finally crush my heart.

“They’ve always had an inappropriate relationship. From the moment you introduced them, it’s been like that the entire time.”
My hand, holding the documents, froze.
I had met Starla at my first internship, where we were colleagues. Back then, she was just a small assistant, constantly bullied by others. After helping her a few times, we gradually became friends.
She was shy by nature, so I took her out to experience more of the world. Worried that she might not have enough money, I frequently gave her gifts and even introduced her to my boyfriend.
I never imagined that from the moment she met Samuel, she started plotting to
seduce him.
I set the documents down, the anger inside. me boiling over.

“A pair of disgusting people.”
Tonny looked at me, letting out a light laugh.
“I thought you had fallen for some kind of high–quality man–one who made you willing to give up inheriting your family‘ s business to be with him. But instead, it turns out he’s just some trash.”
I rolled my eyes at him.
“You have time to mock me, but why
don’t you help me find out who the father of Starla’s baby is?”
Tonny raised an eyebrow, his expression showing some confusion.
