Chapter 10
“Sammy, will you still treat me this well after we‘ re divorced?” Starla asked softly.
Samuel, barely containing his excitement as the divorce stamp was about to be placed, nodded eagerly.
“Don’t worry, Starla. Even if I marry Cassie afterward, the one I truly love will always be you. Besides, you‘ re carrying my child. Everything I have will belong to you and the baby.”
Reassured by his promise, Starla finally signed her name on the divorce papers. The official stamped the document, completing the entire process.
Each holding their copy of the divorce certificate, Samuel and Starla turned
around–only to see me standing behind them with a triumphant smile.
“Well, hello there!”
Samuel was so startled that his divorce
certificate slipped from his hand and fell to the floor.
“Cass… what are you doing here?”
I shrugged nonchalantly.
“Didn’t you call me here to get our marriage certificate? If I hadn’t arrived early, I never would‘ ve known the kind of people you both really are.”
“Cass, let me explain! It’s not what you think—it was all Starla‘ s idea. She begged me to marry her. She said as a single mom, she’d have no way to register the baby’s household status, that she’d be left on her own. She pleaded with me to just get a marriage certificate for the baby’s sake,” Samuel stammered, scrambling to explain.
Even now, he was still lying.
I looked at him with a mocking smile.
“Samuel, have I been too good to you, making you think I’m this naive?”
Samuel froze, then seemed to realize something, anger flashing across his face as he pointed at me.
“Cassie, you knew about this from the
start, didn’t you? This whole thing was your setup!”

Starla dropped all pretense, clinging to Samuel‘ s arm. “Sammy, I told you Cassie’s a snake! She trapped you into divorcing me on purpose–she’s a vicious woman!”
I shot Starla a cold, disdainful look.
“I’m still better than someone who seduced another woman’s husband like you,” I shot back.
“You‘ re talking nonsense! Sammy is my legal husband! If it weren’t for your schemes, he would never have divorced. me. You‘ re the real culprit!” Starla
snapped, her emotions now completely out.
of control.
Samuel’s face darkened, his anger barely
contained.
“So, your hometown‘ s being demolished and everyone’s entitled to one and a half million dollars in compensation per person -was all of that just a lie you made up?”
I crossed my arms, stepping confidently in my high heels, looking down at them with disdain.
“What do you think?”
Samuel’s anger flared instantly as he glared at me.
“Cassey, you snake! Why are you setting me uplike this?”
I gave him a cold, piercing look.
“Oh, Samuel, did you ever consider today when you and Starla were plotting against me? When you were sneaking around behind my back? When you made a fool out of me?”
Samuel’s gaze hardened and a mocking smile played at his lips.
“You really think that forcing a divorce is enough to get back at us? Starla and I can get remarried whenever we want. And don’t forget—I still own fifty percent of that property. If you think you’re cutting me out, think again.”
“That’s right,” Starla added with a smirk. “Sammy stood by your side all these years, putting in the effort to look after you. Even if he didn’t gain much, he’s earned his due. So, consider the house his compensation–other than that, don‘ t expect us to go easy on you.
