Chapter 5
I would never get tired of Tim. We were always making love.
“Since Ken’s too busy with Jenny, I’ll make it up for you. How about joining my company? We haven’t tried it there yet.”
A shiver ran through me as he talked ditty in my ear, making my cheeks flush. I swatted him, which only seemed to make him more excited.
I had been interviewing for a new job for the past half month. Once I landed a new role, I resigned from Ken’s company.
After two weeks of no contact, the first thing he did when he saw me was berate me.
“I spoiled you, Mayson. That’s why you’re acting so out of line. If no company takes you, I won’t either!”
I sneered, “Are you deaf, Ken? I’m resigning. Don’t make it sound like you did me a favor. I got this job fair and square, and I earned every bit of my success. I never owed you anything.”
With that, I packed my stuff and walked away. Ken did not stop me.
Instead, he exclaimed, “You’ll regret what you did today!”
“Not a chance,” I replied without looking back as I left his office.
I bumped into Jenny in the hallway. She smugly remarked, “You couldn’t win over Ken’s heart for ten years. Pathetic.”
I held up my phone, recording as I smiled at her. “If you’re so capable, why hasn’t Ken married you? He’s only willing to keep you on the side.”
Her face twisted with anger and retorted, “You. You married him, but his heart is still with me. Even if you exposed my act, he’d still choose me over you!”
I waved my phone at her. “So, if I send Ken this recording of you admitting to faking it, do you think he’ll still dote on you?”
She panicked and lunged for my phone, her nails digging into my arm.
Smack!
I slapped her hard, shoving her back in disgust. “Get lost!”
I would never have crossed paths with someone as repulsive as her if not because of Ken. Jenny fell to the floor and sobbed. Ken stormed out at the commotion and shouted, ”

Mayson, what did you do?”
“I slapped her. Are you blind?” I snapped coldly.
After sending him the recording, I ignored his shouting and left. I would be crazy to stick around and take more of his abuse.
My mood was foul until I saw Tim outside, casually leaning against his sports car.
He held a bag containing a matcha cake–the dessert I was craving–dangling from one wrist, a jewelry store bag on the other, and a bouquet of bright red roses in his arms. His eyes lit up the moment he saw me, and he rushed over with everything still hanging off him.
I suddenly felt lighter. “Sorry to keep you waiting.”
With a wry smile, Tim replied, “I’ve waited longer, but tell me, were you in there so long because you’re still hung up on Ken? That’s okay. As long as you leave a little space for me, I’ll be happy.”
The sweet talk just rolled off his tongue so easily, but he did not seem that experienced.
We had only crossed paths á few times, and I began avoiding him the moment I realized he had something on me. It was impossible that he had been waiting all these years just for a pretty face.
However, I didn’t call him out on it. He was just an affair partner, after all. There were no feelings between us.
I told him I was heading to my new job and suggested he get on with his day. Tim, usually so clingy, was surprisingly agreeable. He called a cab for me before driving off in his flashy
sports car.
