Now, he can also choose not to love. Human nature is so difficult to understand.
I knelt down and looked at Dwayne. In his face, I seemed to see the future I had once dreamed of–us, a family of three, smiling and looking at each other.
But after all that had happened, I began to, understand that the more I tried to hold onto it, the farther those things slipped away from me. It’s only by focusing on being true to myself that the right people and opportunities will eventually come.
I placed my hand on Dwayne’s shoulder and said, with finality, “Dwayne, we’re
done.”
Once the divorce was finalized, I bought a ticket for the nearest flight–one without a
destination.
Throughout the journey, everything I saw and experienced only confirmed my belief:

I later heard from friends that Dwayne had
gone back to Annie, but without his career to lean on, what could he possibly offer her
now?
But that no longer mattered to me.
Standing atop the snow–covered mountain, I gently placed my hand on my lower abdomen. Through the soft glow of the clouds, I saw my baby once again.
“This time, Mom has completely let go.”
