“Pam, don’t make this harder than it has to
be, okay? Maybe ten grand isn’t much to you,
but it’s a fortune for us. If you ever really
loved Mark, you’ll do the right thing here.”
“So, you admit ten grand isn’t that much?” I
raised an eyebrow. Her face went kinda red,
like she realized how ridiculous she sounded.
“If you refuse to pay up, expect a court
summons,” Mark added.
I swear, these two were operating with like,
half a brain between them. How could they be
Just when I was about to let them have it, a
deep voice cut in. “I’m Ms. Yang’s attorney. If
you have any issues, you can deal with me
directly.”
A guy strode in, wearing a killer suit. He
looked like he could’ve walked off a movie
set, but I was confused. “Um, have we met?”
The guy didn’t hesitate, plopping down next
to me. He pulled out a business card. It had
the name of a big–deal, white–shoe law firm.
“Hello, I’m Cody Emerson, Ms. Yang’s legal
counsel. If there are any disputes with my
client, you can contact me.”
Seeing a real lawyer, Mark and Ashley
clammed up. They shuffled out, looking
く
“Cody Emerson? Is your sister named
Taylor?”
He had to be my friend’s brother.
Just then, my phone buzzed. “Hey, babe,
sorry, something came up. My brother got
back today, and I sent him to meet you. He’s
pretty hot, right?”
I looked at the broad–shouldered, slim-
waisted, long–legged hottie next to me and
nodded hard. “Hot is an understatement.”
Cody chuckled, looking amused. “So, you’re
the ‘super gorgeous, totally awesome‘ Pam
that my sister never shuts up about?”
I inhaled, and coughed. “Um…she’s
exaggerating. Maybe a little pretty.”
“She’s spot on,” the guy said, a smile playing
on his lips.
He probably already knew all my dirty laundry
from my friend.
“Next time you run into a legal imbecile, just
call the cops. What’s wrong with you?”
His smile only deepened. And his eyes
twinkled, I got so flustered. “Why are you
staring at me?
“I wasn’t! I was just about to tell them to get
lost when you showed up.
وو
“Sure you were. Let me give you a lift.”
I got up to leave, but his woodsy cologne
made my head spin.
But if Taylor was right, her brother had no
girlfriend. He might be gay.
Seeing me staring, he bent down to meet my
eyes. “Something on your mind?”
Pam Yang, 28 years old, got carded.
“Nothing.”
