Chapter 40

The next morning, I was awakened by their loud conversation.N

Jane’s voice boomed

Eric, let me tell you something. You can’t spoil women. Just because she’s pregnant doesn’t mean she shouldn’t do anything.

Plenty of women are pregnant, and they still go to work. You’re too soft. You’re treating a worthless bug like a treasure.\ I feel sorry for you. You work yourself to death, and when you come home, there’s not even a hot meal. We’ve been depending on each other for so long. I wish I hadn’t let you get married. Now that you’ve got a wife, we both have to serve her!”

I leaned against the bedroom door, quietly listening. How much more was she going to say?

Eric just sat on the sofa like a king, not stopping her

He even poured Jane a cup of coffee, looking after her with such care.N

In the later stages of pregnancy, my sleep was already bad, with the growing uterus and frequent trips to the bathroom

Eric knew I was a light sleeper, but he still let Jane shout and make a scene.N

So, it’s obvious when someone doesn’t love you. How had I not realized it earlier?

Jane was mopping the floor when she slipped

Eric immediately rushed over to support her, his hand lingering on her waist for a moment

His words of concern slipped out without thinking. “Be careful. I’ll do it.”

No need. Housework is for women. You just focus on your part.”

Jane smiled, but it wasn’t proper at all

In broad daylight, they flirted without a care, not even bothering to hide it from me.”

Jane was always like thatusing sweet words to control Eric

Just like during the May Day holiday, when I was already eight months pregnant and feeling unwell

Jane accused me of looking down on her because of her role as a housekeeper and claimed I didn’t respect her as an elder

Emotional manipulation was her greatest weapon

During the May Day river trip, everyone else was fine, but we ended up capsizing

Jane had seen a fish in the water and reached out to catch it, splashing herself.N

Then they started splashing water at each other like a pair of fools

I sat at the back, and before I knew it, we were in the water

I didn’t know if it was because the two people were making too much noise or if it was a problem with the boat

It only took a moment to fall into the water.”

I screamed Eric’s name, but even as we fell in, he swam away from me, toward Jane.N

The cold water hit me, making my body feel heavy as I quickly sank, swallowing mouthfuls of water

In the face of life and death, I never expected my husband to choose someone else, especially while I was carrying his child. In that moment, my heart turned cold

I stopped struggling and clung to my belly, leaving everything to fate.N

Luckily, the life jacket saved me.”

I walked toward the shore, stepping over the corpse of my love

I finally understoodwhen disappointment reaches its limit, even the deepest love grows old.N
