After I was diagnosed with ALS, I
was tricked into marriage by the
driver’s son who pretended to be stupid.
Chapter 1
The day my dad’s company went belly up, the
nanny’s daughter, Ashley, pushed him off the
roof. He died instantly.
My fiancé? He didn’t even try to get her
arrested. He announced at the funeral that
she was pregnant with his kid.
I wanted to call the cops, get some justice,
but instead, my fiancé locked me in the
basement for a month.
The basement caught fire. I was almost dead.
L
Then, the driver’s son, Cody, unlocked the
door and pushed me out just as the roof was
collapsing.
I made it out.
But the doctors told me Cody inhaled too
much smoke saving me. He was mentally
stunted, like a seven–year–old.
–
I gave up on everything revenge, my career
–
— and focused on taking care of Cody.
Three years later, I overheard something in
the basement.
“Cody, why are you still pretending to be
slow? Just to get attention from Sarah?
You’d rather be like this than reconnect with
your family?”
<
“If I make her feel guilty enough, Ashley will
be free to have her baby without any trouble.”
“It’s almost time. I can wake up now…”
- 11.
The guy I thought saved me? He’d been part
of the plot to destroy me all along.
Well, screw them both. I hope they live happily
ever after.
- 1.
Down in the basement, Cody was looking at a
picture of a woman and a baby, stroking it
like it was the Holy Grail.
“Finally, I can wake up and be with them for
real.”
Г
“Don’t mess this up. Make sure you act like
you just woke up for the first time in three
years.”
“Have the exoneration papers ready. If she
asks, just say my uncle’s death was an
accident. No evidence.”
The housekeeper, Betty, looked
uncomfortable, like her conscience was
bothering her.
“Cody, Sarah’s given up everything to take
care of you for three years. You know how
much she cares about you.‘
“If you keep lying to her, she’ll find out. Then
what?”

<
Cody looked up at the picture on the wall, his
voice filled with regret and longing.
“Unless someone rats me out, she’ll be too
busy feeling grateful to even think about it.”
Betty’s face was full of worry.
“Cody, you’re going down a dangerous path.
You’ve been with Sarah for three years, you
know she’s a good woman, and it is a truth
everyone knows.”
“Helping cover it up makes you just as guilty!”
“If Sarah knew…”
“Enough!”
Cody slammed his fist on the table bic tono

Cody slammed his fist on the table, his tone
sharp.
“Betty, you’re overstepping. You’re just the
housekeeper my mom hired to take care of
me.”
“Remember where your loyalties lie.”
“And if she does find out? So what? I’ll just
lock her back in the basement.”
I was hiding outside the door, and the
memory of being locked up made me weak.
I slumped against the wall, covering my mouth
to keep from screaming.
So, they set up this whole thing to protect a
murderer.
They banked on my kindness, using Cody to
trap me, exploiting my guilt to stop me from
getting revenge.
Meanwhile, Ashley was living the good life
with my childhood friend, Nick, raising their
daughter, and killing it at work.
I thought Cody was my lifeline after all the
betrayal.
Turns out, he was just pushing me deeper
into hell.
People who betray your trust deserve to get
what’s coming to them.
I sat down at my desk, staring at the doctor’s
report. My heart was broken, and I couldn’t fix
it
I don’t know how long I sat there, but then
Betty burst in, banging on the door and
shouting, “Sarah, Cody, Cody’s awake….”
Her acting was over–the–top, like she was
trying too hard.
She was waiting for me to play my part.
I hid my emotions and looked up at her,
smiling weakly. “Go to him.”
I went to his room, and the private doctor was
already there, checking him over.
Then, they left, and it was just me and Cody
in the bed.
He took my hand, looking at me with fake
love.
く
His hand was warm, but it couldn’t warm my
heart.
He loved Ashley more than life itself.
“Oh, right, the lawyer brought me this…”
He pulled a stack of papers from under his
pillow, and gave them to me.
“It was an accident. The cops investigated.
Ashley didn’t push him…”
