A few days later, it was Matthew’s birthday, and I brought a cake I had made to his birthday party.
Matthew’s eyes lit up
up as he hurriedly hid the cake. “Don’t let my classmates see it, or they’ll eat it all. I want to take it home and eat it by myself.”
I chuckled, thinking Matthew was trying to cheer me up. It was just a cake, not a feast.
I bent down to talk to him when someone bumped into me, spilling their drink all over me. I quickly went upstairs to change into my spare clothes.
As I passed the corner of the banquet hall, a hand suddenly reached out from behind a flower pot and grabbed me. “Mommy.”
Evelyn seemed like she wanted to jump into my arms,
but upon seeing the cold look in my eyes, she stopped short, timidly tugging at the hem of my shirt. “Mommy…”
“I’m no longer your mother.” I brushed her hand away.
Tears immediately filled her eyes. “Mommy, I know I was wrong. I will change. Please don’t leave me.”
I found it strange. I used to worry so much when she frowned in front of me, but now, seeing her cry so hard left me completely unmoved. “Some mistakes can be corrected but

I looked up and saw Daniel standing not far away. He looked haggard, with a stubbly beard and bloodshot eyes. I didn’t even recognize him at first.
I walked past him toward the second floor. But just as I reached the stairs, Edith suddenly lunged out from somewhere and blocked my way. She lowered her head and said softly, “Do you know? Andy is dying.”
I was taken aback, wondering how she could be here.
“He has been tortured for so long, and he is withering away, thin as a dry twig. I beg you, give him a kidney, please? That way, you won’t die either. Without a fresh kidney source, Andy will die.”
Before I could respond, she suddenly smiled at me. “Thank you in advance.”
Suddenly, she revealed a knife hidden behind her back, her face twisted with rage as she tackled me, straddling my waist. With both hands, she thrust the knife toward my stomach. “Give Andy a kidney! Give him a kidney!”
“Help! Call the police!” The crowd screamed and scattered in all directions.
Amidst the chaos, I thought I heard someone calling my name and footsteps approaching. Just as the knife was about to pierce my stomach, someone grabbed Edith’s wrist, twisting the knife away from me.
“Run!” Daniel pressed down on Edith’s arm from behind, pulling her up so I could stand and escane

“Daniel!” Edith shrieked. “You promised to help me. You said you would help me! But why did you go back on your word? I only need her kidney! Don’t you know Andy is going to die? Let me go!”
“You’re crazy, Edith. She isn’t obligated to donate a kidney to your son. This is murder!”
Edith screamed and struggled violently. Before I could get
back up, she broke free from Daniel and turned to stab him. Ast Daniel’s body gradually fell, he still tightly gripped Edith’s wrist, refusing to let go.
“Everyone who stops me should die. You should die, too!” Edith furiously stabbed at him.
Daniel was covered in blood, his mouth constantly bleeding. He kept looking at me. “Hurry… Run. Cee… I’m… I’m sorry…”
I shakily got to my feet and picked up a wooden stick used for decorations, swinging it and hitting Edith on the back of the head. Blood gushed from her wound, and her movements. paused for a moment, but she didn’t stop. I struck her several more times until she finally collapsed, unconscious on the ground.
“Daniel. How are you? Don’t close your eyes.” I took off my jacket and pressed it against his wound, but blood continued to pour out incessantly. Trembling, I picked up my phone from the pool of blood and dialed emergency services.
“Cee… I’m sorry…” Daniel reached for my hand but lost strength and let it drop.

years, but because of that, I took everything for granted. I once had all your love, but I belittled you because I knew you would never leave me. I… I was too arrogant. To me, you were like air… I only understood what I’ve lost now…”
He gasped for breath, his hands cold as ice.
“Daddy! Please don’t die!” Evelyn cried out, throwing herself onto him, tears streaming down her face.
“Cee… if I die… Evelyn…”
At that moment, I couldn’t hold back my sorrow anymore, tears flowing down my cheeks and landing on Daniel’s bloodied face. I cradled his hand. “You have to live. Evelyn can’t be without her dad.”
Daniel looked at me with longing. He wanted to speak again but could only open his mouth without making a sound. Finally, he smiled and slowly closed his eyes.
“Daniel!” I called out to him. “Hang in there! I promise you, as long as you survive, we’ll start over.”
Daniel’s eyelashes seemed to flutter slightly.
Paramedics and police soon arrived at the scene and rushed both Edith and Daniel to the hospital for emergency treatment.
I stood outside the operating room, feeling heavy as I watched the red emergency lights. The surgery lasted a day and a night, and the doctors came out multiple times to issue critical condition notices.
