Chapter 6 Daniel’s Attempt to Make Amends
“I… I just hit you out of anger. I’ll take you to see a doctor.” Daniel hurriedly grabbed my arm, trying to touch the swollen. side of my face.
“Get lost.” I shook him off and, after returning Matthew to hist parents, went to treat my wounds alone.
After coming out of the examination room, I found Daniel waiting outside the door. He immediately walked over. “Cee, does your face still hurt? It was my fault. If you’re still angry, you can hit me again. I promise not to fight back.”
I ignored him, and he tried to take the prescription from my hand. “What medication do you need? I can get it for you.”
“No need.” I dodged his hand. “Just sign the divorce agreement.”
“Don’t say such words in anger.” Daniel looked a bit flustered. “I admit I haven’t cared for you enough during this time. I’m sorry. Can we just resolve this peacefully?”
I looked at him coldly. “Then we’ll see each other in court.”
The next day, when I went to tutor Matthew, his mother suddenly asked me about the university I graduated from. After hearing my answer, she said, “You have real talent. Being a tutor is a waste of it. By the way, there’s a manager position open in

you.”
“No thanks. I should thank you for saving Matthew yesterday,” she smiled at me gratefully. “I’ll take you to my company
tomorrow. If you have extra time, come back to tutor Matthew. I’ll pay you two salaries.”
After leaving Matthew’s house, I looked up at the clear blue sky, my heart filled with hope for the future.
As I walked out the door, I suddenly saw Daniel outside. he saw me too. He quickly came over and blocked my path. When he saw my indifferent expression, he stepped aside. “L… I came to bring you ointment. Also, I visited the place where you live. How could you live in such a place? Come back with me.”
“You really have a short memory. When you went bankrupt, didn’t we live in a place like that for three years?”
Daniel’s expression stiffened, and a mix of guilt and nostalgia. crossed his face. “At that time, we were very poor. You would always pick a bunch of wildflowers to put by the bed. No matter how troubled I was by business, seeing those flowers when I came home made me feel peaceful.”
I was stunned, and memories from the past uncontrollably surfaced in my mind. Life had been difficult, but Daniel and I were very loving. His business had been losing money, but whenever I glanced at new clothes, he would secretly take odd jobs to save money to buy them for me.
I was certainly happy but even more felt pity for his struggles.
“Isn’t it right for me to earn money for my wife? Plus, how could

The sweetness of those memories seemed to transcend time and bring warmth to my heart.
At that moment, Daniel’s phone suddenly rang. It was Edith. “Dan, Andy’s condition has worsened again, and we can’t wait any longer. Didn’t you say you would persuade Cee? When will she donate a kidney to Andy?”
Daniel immediately hung up the phone and looked at me in panic. “I’m not here for-”
Before he could finish his sentence, I slapped him again. “Daniel, you always make me see how ugly human nature can be.”
“Cee, let me explain.” He hurriedly grabbed my arm. “I’m already looking for other ways to treat Andy. I’m not…”
I didn’t want to hear another word from him, fearing that I would be disgusted enough to throw up. I kicked his leg, broke free, and ran into the subway station.
The next day, I packed my things to head to the company. Since it was my first day on the job, I didn’t have much to do -just needed to familiarize myself with the process and the department staff. The day went by relatively easily.
When I returned home that night, I found my landlord waiting outside. He smiled as he approached me. “I’m very sorry, but I can’t rent this apartment to you anymore. I need to renovate it for my son’s wedding. So, could you move to another one of my properties? Don’t worry, the environment there is better, and

I nodded. It didn’t matter where I lived as long as the rent didn’t increase. I immediately gathered my few belongings and left with the landlord.
To my surprise, he drove me to a villa area in the city center, then nodded and bowed to Daniel at the entrance. “Boss, I’ve completed my task. Please remember to settle the remaining payment.” He quickly fled afterward.
Daniel walked over. “I know you’re upset with me and don’t want to go home. You can stay here for now. It’s better than that shabby place.”
“Are you crazy?” I threw my bag at his face. “Where I live has nothing to do with you. Even if I lived in a dilapidated house, it would still be my own territory. As long as I’m inside, no one can kick me out.”
“I’m not trying to kick you out.” Daniel quickly grabbed my shoulders. “As long as you want, you can come back anytime. Cee, life outside is tough. Come back.”
I sneered and shook him off, “Life outside is tiring, but I can support myself. Every penny I earn is mine. No one can cut off my financial source, and no one will say I’m a useless person living off you. Even if it’s hard, I willingly accept it because it’s much better than being a free nanny for you and Evelyn.”
Taking advantage of Daniel’s moment of shock, I turned to leave. Once I was out of the villa area, I immediately called my landlord, demanding a refund of the remaining rent. I had paid for a month and a deposit. I had only lived there for half a month, and I wasn’t going to let the rest of the money go to
waste.

The landlord didn’t want to give me the money. “Ma’am, your husband is so rich. Why do you care about this little amount? Just do me a favor and consider it a gift.”
“If you don’t refund my money, I’ll play this recording on a loudspeaker near your house twenty–four hours a day. Just don’t be embarrassed.”
In the end, the landlord chose to keep his dignity and reluctantly refunded my money. He complained, “Why are you so
calculative?”
“Maintaining my legal rights isn’t being calculative. Your resentment toward my actions simply because you couldn’t take advantage of me is just you being ashamed.”
That night, I found a hotel to spend the night, and the next day, during my break at work, I sought a new place to rent.
