Chapter 11
The other end of the line fell silent for a long moment, and I decided to hang up.
Just as I was lost in thought, Miranda and my dad walked in with a guest.
An elderly man with a head full of white hair and an old–fashioned pipe entered, followed closely by a sleek black cat that seemed to be all shadows.
“Ryan, this is my granddaughter Keira. Can you take a look at her and see if there’s anything off?”
Miranda turned to me and said, “Keira, this is the expert I told you about. You can call him Sir Watson.”
She ushered the old man into the room while casting a worried glance in my direction.
I couldn’t shake the feeling that ever since the black cat had followed Ryan inside, it had been staring at me intently.
I obediently recounted all the strange occurrences I had experienced recently, including how my code had been plagiarized, my ideas stolen, and even how Megan seemed to tap into my thoughts as soon as they crossed my mind.
I kept my rebirth a secret, though.

Chapter 11
“So, you’re saying someone has been stealing your thoughts without you even realizing it?” Ryan asked, his playful demeanor replaced by a serious one.
I felt a shiver under his piercing gaze and nodded.

Without saying another word, Ryan took a deep drag from his pipe, releasing a slow stream of blue smoke.
But then, to my shock, the smoke didn’t dissipate as expected. Instead, it swirled around me and was drawn into the neckla
was wearing.
The black cat, witnessing this, started hissing and puffing up its
fur.
I was frozen, chills running down my spine, unable to move.
“Sir… Sir Watson, what on earth is happening?”
Ryan chuckled, trying to ease my tension, and pointed at my necklace, asking in a low voice, “Where did you get this, girl?”
Realizing there was something wrong with the necklace, I answered honestly, “It was a gift from my boyfriend.”
It was indeed Logan who had given me the necklace. He had picked me up on my first day at school, and I was nervous being in a big city among so many unfamiliar faces.
Logan had been kind and gentle with me.

In my junior year, I confessed my feelings for him.

After a moment of hesitation, he agreed and gifted me this necklace, claiming it was a family heirloom that represented his acceptance of me and that I should wear it close to my heart.
After a few arguments due to Megan’s interference, Logan woul always come back, insisting I keep the necklace on, warning n that taking it off would bring bad luck.
And now, after a year of wearing it, I found it was stuck arou my neck, impossible to remove.
Ryan patted my shoulder, trying to comfort me.
“Girl, there’s something wrong with that gift from your
boyfriend. You’d be better off cutting ties with someone like
him!”
Miranda, overhearing this, put her hands on her hips and exclaimed, “That scoundrel!
“How dare he harm my Keira! Ryan, you have to protect my girl!”
Anxiously, I turned to Ryan and asked what exactly was wrong with the necklace.
“This is a cunning curse, a pair of mother and child curses. If the child curse feeds on a person’s life force for a year, that person will never be able to escape its grip.”
Chapter 11
It all made sense now. No wonder I couldn’t take the necklace off
after a year.
Ryan scrutinized the necklace closely.
“You said that girl can know your thoughts without you realizing it? That’s because the mother curse is connected to her.
“The child curse’s knowledge is immediately relayed to the mother curse so she can act before you even realize it.
“And once the child curse has drained your life force, it will bring misfortune upon you, leading to a terrible fate.”
His words hit me like a ton of bricks, sending me spiraling into a cold dread.
So it turned out that Logan didn’t just be with me for no reason; he wanted to keep me around because he was using me!
Logan had introduced me to Megan to set up that sinister mother–child curse, all so she could easily take everything that belonged to me.
I mused, “What a scumbag!”
He never loved me at all—everything was part of his twisted plan.
As reality crashed down around me, I felt my eyes start to well up. Ryan noticed and clicked his tongue in disapproval.

“Don’t cry. I know how to deal with him!”
