Chapter 5
Logan’s frantic gaze landed on me, and he lifted his chin in my direction.
“Wait, there’s been a misunderstanding. Megan is like my sister, and that’s my girlfriend over there.”
A pin–drop silence followed, and I could almost hear someone murmur, “Really? Just that ordinary? I mean, Megan and Logan seem like a better match.”
After a brief, awkward pause, Megan stepped in to smooth things over, throwing an arm around my shoulders.
“Oh come on, you guys can’t say that about Keira! She’s a total whiz in the computer science department!”
In an instant, the crowd’s expressions shifted, their eyes now filled with a mix of disdain and derision.
“So she’s the one who copied Megan? Wow, you really can’t judge a book by its cover. She’s ugly and has no shame.”
“Right? You can tell a lot about a person from their looks. At least Megan is kind enough to invite her to dinner.”
Each comment felt like a needle pricking my skin, and I squirmed in my seat, unable to escape.

Running away would only confirm their accusations, making me look guilty as charged.
Megan shot me a challenging look, and I pretended to ignore the
whispers, burying my face in my plate as I tried to figure out my next
move.
Just as I was drowning in uncertainty, I noticed Megan’s laptop sitting right next to me.
Maybe, just maybe, I could find some clues by opening her computer.
My heart raced as I saw everyone else busy chatting and drinking, so I slowly reached for the laptop.
I pulled up the history of her programming files and was stunned to see how closely our thought processes mirrored each other.
Even her bug–fixing records lined up perfectly with mine.
This was all too strange.
Just then, a cold voice slithered into my ear.
“Keira, are you snooping on my code?”
